JD 4044M
Hello All

This is my first post as I'm new here, but I've been reading TBN for a few months now as I was researching tractors and have to say this site is great. There's alot of good advise and knowledge here. So my question is this. This will be my first time buying a tractor, up until now I've just been renting a JD from a local equipment rental place to mow 5 acres of hilly pasture and do other work around the farm. I'm located on the Oregon coast and have 40 acres, with a slight to moderate incline in places.

I've been looking at both the Kubota 4701 and JD 4044M and was getting ready to pull the trigger on the 4701 but decided to check in with the JD dealer across the street to see what they had comparable to the Kubota. They offered me the following deal which is close to $1000 less than the Kubota:
- 2014 JD 4044m
- Front loader
- eHydro
- Frontier RC2072 deck

All for 29,000 financed. Not knowing much about buying tractors outside of the threads i've read here and doing research on the web, this sounds like a good deal? Any help or advice from the experienced tractor owners / buyers would be much appreciated.

Thank You
Dennis

Hi Dennis and welcome,
One of the things you could do for yourself, is to go to their websites and use their "Build Your Own".
This should tell you how much off of list both are offering you. You can still receive the thoughts and comments of others on this site. I think the 44M is a "fixed" loader, IRRC.

One suggestion before you pull the trigger, is to check out "LS" and Kioti. Others here have spoken favorably as more value for the money. Both units you're considering are viewed as fine machines.
Do you plan on running any PTO implements ? If so, how many remotes are included in your pricing.
I think LS comes with 3 remotes as std, in addition to some other features that JD and Kuba usually charge extra for.

YOu might want to take a little extra time and check out the alternatives before you buy. Although the JD does sound like an attractive deal. I will say, for the difference of only a thousand $. you may also want to consider the rep. of both dealers and service.
Good luck and welcome.
John

Hi John

Thank you very much for your reply, I sure do appreciate it. Funny enough I actually started looking at the LS's and they do seem to offer quite a bit for the buck.

The only PTO implements I'm planning on running is the Frontier brush hog (72"). I don't see myself using any other implements in the near future so I wasn't planning on getting any other remotes.

Per your advice, I've been calling around to different dealers as well as researching other tractor mftr's to compare prices. Up till now, I've only been communicating via phone / email but will visit the various dealers in my area to check out their support and service centers before putting any money down. As of now JD has given me the best deal with a brush hog.

Thanks again and don't hesitate to throw more suggestions at me as I'm still learning my around all this equipment.
Have a great day!
Dennis

Hey Dennis,
Here's another thought. There's a guy who has actively posted and has a 44M, which he bought about 9 months ago, IRRC. He's on another forum (GTT) and he goes by "Vette". You might want to check out threads tied to his name. He really likes his 44M. I'm sure he'd be glad to share his experience as well as what he paid for his machine. Also, what other choices he considered. This other website/forum is only JD. It's categories are broken down into 3 categories: small (SCUT), medium (3000 series), Large (4000).

Check it out...tell Vette I sent you....Again, best of luck.

Welcome to TBN. I don't know anything about the 44M but I would suggest spending a good amount of time in the seat of any tractor you're considering. Some people just don't "fit" certain tractors.

Thanks wmonroe - I took that advice and waited for the dealer to get one on his lot and went and sat on the tractor. i'm 6'2 about 210 and the fit was nice. Controls well laid out and plenty big enough for my hilly property.

Thanks again
Have a great day!

Did you go with the 44M?

Yes...The 44M seems to be a good fit and the price is in a range that will allow me to possibly get a root grapple to help with some the clearing I need to get to this year to make some room for livestock. I'm just finalizing the price for some accessories I need such as third valve up front for the grapple, filling tires with ballast, some work lights some other small additions. I live on the oregon coast which is about 1 1/2 away and the dealer said they will deliver it for free with a full tank. They also have mobile tech's which they can dispatch in the event I get in trouble with mechanics etc. Seems like a pretty good deal both with machine and dealer. I'm pretty excited about finally getting my own tractor and being able to really start working our property.

Have a great day!

Well...The good news about living in Oregon is that there is no sales tax, so that is the sales price. Of course I had to go and look at a root grapple so it will be slightly more.:)

Have a great day!

Hi John

Just found that guy you were talking about on GTT. I'm going to ask him about his tractor and what he thinks. Thanks again and I'll tell him you sent me over.

Have a great day!

Was the Southern Farm Show in Raleigh, NC today and we looked at just about everything in this range. A few things about the JD M over the R we didn't like. #1 was the non folding ROPS, then the loader mounted Joystick(seemed like it was out of place) and the fixed loader. We were surprised anyone would put out a fixed ROPS on a tractor of that size these days, saved maybe $150 in manufacturing.

Hi Gratefull11

Thank you for the info! I agree, the fixed ROPS was surprising, but since I will be parking it under my pole barn, there's plenty of room and that wasn't a huge deal for me. Going under tree's and tight spots is a different story though, so I'll have to see how that plays out. Being that I'm not a seasoned tractor operator the weird position of the joystick wasn't a huge issue as this will be my first real tractor so I'll just adjust to it. I feel like a I got a really good deal and the dealer seemed like a good group of guys so I'm feeling pretty comfortable with my purchase at this point. I can't wait to get to working with the new tractor. The new JD will make short work of some of the jobs I have around the property. I ended up getting a root grapple and box blade as well as the loader and mowing deck. I'm all set to get some things done this season.

Thank you very much for the input, it's much appreciated.

Have a great weekend!
Dennis

Got my tractor home for the weekend (goes back Monday to get loader installed), and having pulled a dozen logs my atv couldn't budge without a log arch, I can honestly say you will be a very happy man when you get a tractor. :)

4wd is awesome on snow!
