I have recently purchased a 1984 6610. I used it yesterday to do some grassing cutting with a 8 foot topper did the job well, but when I finished I noticed that the rear axle was really hot, is this normal or do I have a problem ?

Make sure your remote valve levers are in the neutral position and not stuck in the raise or lower position.

The brake wasn't left on was it? That'll heat up the rear end in a hurry.

Thanks guys for your replies, but remote valve levers were in the neutral position and the handbrake was not on. Any other ideas ?

What do you mean by "hot". It's normal for the rear axle fluid to get warm just due to inefficiencies in the gear train and the hydraulic pump.

It is not the oil that is getting hot but the metal work. I could not keep my hand on the rear axle because it was so hot. I called my wife over and she could smell the heat coming off it as she got close !

Maybe a brake is stuck?

Or a bad bearing. I would vote of brake dragging internally. Might take it out naked and do 20-30 180 degree turns and some breaking in reverse. The tractor may have set a lot.

Is the hyd. oil cooler working?

Thanks guys for the replies, i did replace a hand brake cable and may have screwed it down too tight. I have loosened it off so will see what happens next time I take it out. I will also do the turns etc as suggested, as I am told the tractor had been laid up for some time before I bought it.

I expect you may have found your problem. Those are awesome tractors.
