1997 Kubota M5400S
Hello to all,

Just got a quote from a Kubota Dealter on some hydraulic filters for my M5400S and could not beleive what i heard.

Does anyone know of an online/reputable place to buy either Kubota parts or Compatible Kubota parts like Hydraulic Filters, Air filters, Oil filters, Fuel Filters, etc? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
tstex

Just check eBay- some dealers advertise filter packages, and that's probably the best deal you're going to find. I have noticed they are pricey... but then, they are pretty heavy duty filters, and they don't sell a lot of them, so whatyado?

Thank you V...I am not much of an Ebay shopper..was looking for a place that specializes in filters rather than an auctioneer, but I do appreciate your response.

You're welcome. The eBay sources I am thinking of are "eBay" stores that list stuff at fixed prices, not bidding, and are real business's ways of reaching a wider market. Just enter "Kubota filters" and you'll see a bunch of dealers offering packagedeals. Now, finding what you need for your tractor may take a bit of investigating. Or, just go to Messicks and track down what you need. I find their pricing competitive with the best pricing out there, pretty much. Good luck in hunting down what you need!

Okay, I couldn't help myself... I had to see if I could find M5400 filters, and sure enough, Messick's lists them:

Kubota M5400 parts

No doubt, they have access to much more, but this should give you a comparison?

GWD, thank you. And V, thank you for showing the exact link.

THis seals the deal....I am for sure going this route. Since my brother uses the same parts, I guess we will get like 4 fuel filters each, 2-3 air filters ea, 2 sets of hydraulics each and I beleive I can get a local oil filter for $6.86....I wish you guys lived closer, I'd take you out for some cold ones...really appreciate your help...done deal.

Thanks again,
tstex

Consider that allot of ebay stuff is on a ''buy it now' and is like buying from the source.

I hear about NAPA Gold filters & looked up M5400. Got this. Part Detail ('M5400 w / Kubota F2803EA Engine')

I had stumbled onto a chart just days ago that compared specs of different brands and #$%& I didn't bookmark the page. :( Will look for it later & add a link to this thread because IMO a well chosen title means that much. Thanks for asking, tstex!

I found two comparisons and it seems one is for 'regular' & one for 'HD'. Of course, they don't show our particular part #s but IMO these are good for general info. Cross-reference charts are always your friend, no?

Silicone (orange) is said to be the better mat'l for anti-drainback valves vs nitrile rubber (black), as it handles high temps better.

btw, interesting info/comments on some of the threads I searched. We know that domestic makers re-brand their products for others (5 or so each for tires & batteries ) and Wix/Dana makes a bunch of the good filters. Apparently Valvoline re-brands for others, too. tog

I buy my filters and other consumables at NAPA. Their branded filters are made by WIX. Cross reference was no problem. They have several levels of pricing; over the counter retail, military discount, fleet discount, re-sale discount (service garages). Varies by product by as much as 50% less than retail. I estimate I save over $100 per full service that changes every thing. Always negotiate the best discount you can. I have posted the NAPA part #s for BXs several times in the past.

Messick's is a great place to deal with, I order all of my Ford/NH parts and most of my Kubota parts from them.

Thanks Guys. And yes Grind, those are good charts...

The Messicks kubota fileter was $20, while at the dealer it was $9, but everything else [fuel, air and hydraulic] were good or better deals.

I have a friend that used to work for Fram. I called around and found the Kubota cross reference and the New Holland [larger filter I used for my M5400S] and they both were $3.77. I also noted from the chart Grind provided that the pleats were 33 while other brands were 50-60's...is this the main difference? I am all for saving a buck, but not when X dollar savings could mean XXXX dollars in potential engine issues.

Has anyone an opinion on the best compatible oil filter for Kubota? All make/man charts always says theirs is the best, but real-life experience from users such as ourselves surely outweights advertising. I have not had any problems w the larger New Holland Filters, so I might just stay with those.

Finally, has anyone found a good compatible outer air-filter for the M5400S engine?

Thanks again,
Tstex

A 'micron rating' would tell you the average particle size trapped, but FF's charts don't include that. I'm sure other accessible sources do, if they're trustworthy. 'Media area' suggests longer service life before plugging up, and note that we won't have a bypass to maintain full flow if left on too long. Pop a plugged element and you can expect flow to rinse a mess into the stream.

Some old-timers would change filters more often than oil (also suggested by owners manuals) & you can see how they got away with that. Oil doesn't wear out, it becomes acidic and that's where babbit metal gets etched & causes rods to knock. Tighter tolerances in today's engines demands changes at closer intervals than way back when.

Was it here or elsewhere that I heard horror stories of not being sure that the old filter rubber stuck to the block? Double seals won't hold full pressure and oil can spew out in quarts per minute or per mile. Thanks for suggesting another search for air filters! More later. :)

For 'M5400 w / Kubota F2803EA Engine' ...

Enter your ZIP Code here to find local suppliers if you hate to wait for shipping: WIX Filters - Where to Buy
Commonality between makes/models ups your chance of finding what you need 'in stock'.

I'll go with Fleet Filter & bide my time when planning ahead. Good prices, esp if you have room on the shelf to stock-up

Grind,

I checked out F-Filter and they too have some pretty good pricing..their hydraulic filters seem like a pretty good buy...how does the Wix stand-up to OEM Kubota? Not asking for any major research, but just a general statement on what's common knowledge amongst the posters and yourself here.

Here's a link:

Wix 57098 & Napa 7098 Oil Filter: FleetFilter Secure Online Store - Wix, Fram, LuberFiner, Baldwin

$22 vs $32 works for me..but what does "Style: Spin-On Hydraulic Filter" imply?

Thanks again,
tstex

My semi-informed opinion (based on what I was told by friends who have experience with heavy equipment, fleet diesels, etc., but mostly guys who care about these things, is that Wix are good. And, I am finding NAPA a friendly, reasonably priced place to buy stuff. I doubt if many of us will really put oil and hydraulic filters "to the test" since we use our own equipment, and care about it. Just my two cents worth...
