4720 (2013) / 4310 (2002)
So recently I traded in my 4310 for a cabbed 4720.

When my 4310, needed to be refueled, I would lay my five gallon fuel jug on the edge of the loader arm and simply wait for the jug to run dry. On my 4720, the fuel cap is on the back fender and refueling requires me to hoist the fuel jug onto my shoulder while making sure that the nozzle stays in the fuel filler.

Needless to say, there has got to be an easier way to do this which got me wondering how the rest of you manage to fuel your larger tractors?

Re: How do you fiuel your tractor?

There was a thread about this a while back. I looked for it, but couldn't find it. My biggest tractor isn't what you would call large. It's a 3930. I bought a fuel funnel just last week and haven't had to use it yet. But it has a float to let you know when it's full. But with my jugs with the old style spouts, I just put the spout in the filler and set the jug on the raised dashboard. The newer jugs that don't work, I have been using a siphon hose to put the fuel in an old jug. Got tired of the taste of fuel, so I bought the funnel. Yesterday when I bought fuel, I just put four gallons in each of the new jugs so they would be easier to handle. I will have to fuel it a couple of times with the funnel to find out what works best, but standing on the ground seems more stable than standing on the running board.

Edit: We have a 55 gallon drum with a push-pull pump, but since my sister and BIL have been using the tractor more than me, it's at their place. If you use your tractor very much, this would be the way to go. Not sure what we paid for it, we have had this one for over thirty five years. But a good one will cost about $150, and some of the cheap ones are from $35-50. LD

Ability to load fuel wasn't something I really considered when I made my purchase. After reading a few threads about some of the things people need to go through to fuel their tractors I'm really tickled the unit I picked has the fuel fill located someplace easy to access; right beside the step to enter the operator platform. I can easily set my foot on the step, set a 5 gallon jug on my knee, and tip to pour.

I just drive my TC30 the half mile to the convenience store and fill up on the off-road diesel they have on tap. I piss off folks going and coming, but I'm old enough not to care.

If a 5 gallon jug is too heavy for you, you can get a smaller 2 to 3 gallon jug to hoist and just load it a couple times. If you use enough fuel in a year, you can get a 30 to 100 gallon fuel tank on legs for gravity flow. Just be sure to have a good filter system on the tank.

With a nozzel. Ok, I have to confess, I have a fuel station 2 miles from my house so I drive the tractor over to it and put in the off-road diesel, grab a snack, a drink, and drive back to work. The beauty of the country with a grocery store (and and interstate) 2 miles away. Best of both worlds!

I feel your pain on the 5gal can though, I do the same with the skid loader (dont drive that one to the station). At 22mph with the deere, the drive is no big deal. 11 mph with the skid is a bit much.

Thanks for posting that other link. Just read through it and found it to be a good read. Am now seriously considering getting one of those gas caddys from one of the American companies like Handy industries or HMC. They are pretty **** expensive, however I tend to refuel my tractor (15 gallons) about every other week except during winter, so it may be a justifiable expense.

One of the first things I did after buying my tractor is start looking for a fuel tank.
I have never regretted putting this one together. And my bad shoulder is very happy with it.
Found the tank on Craig痴 list and the 12v pump from northern tool.
I think I have around $150.00 total in this one.

I set a 5 gal can on the back fender, toss the retarded dysfunctional safety spout to the side, and insert one of these self-priming siphon hoses (just shake) into the can to fill the tractor. I then go check the oil and other things for the 1-2 minutes it takes to siphon the can.

I bought a commercial 50ltr. set-up to what you made up Tom. Like you I have never regretted it as all I have to do is top up the bowser tank via a 20ltr. jerry can.

Any safe way a person can come up with to get the fuel into the tractor is a bonus... none of us are getting any younger, ya know!

This is a good thread, just found it. After 10 years of climbing on the tractor with a 5 gal can I thought, there has to be an easier way. I found this in the greenhouse. It works real good.

Right now, I'm hauling my tractor back and forth to my property since I don't want it out while in the middle of no where. So, currantly when needed I stop at the Fuel Station (only sells off road diesel and eythanol free gas) and fill it up.
When I evetually move to my property I'll get a tank and pump. I got tired of hauling 5 gallon jugs and bought a tank and pump. But, sold it when I sold the farm. But, I'll get another one when I move to my new place. It's OK, if you only use 5 gallons a week or so. But, it's tiresome and inconvenient when you using 40 gallons every couple of days.

Way back when, when I was servicing a fleet of trucks, those type of containers were used to top off the engine oil they work good, too good. Any time someone needed to take any liquid from bulk containers it was their first choice. Seems the same container worked good for antifreeze, water, transmission fluid and draining just about anything. Be careful to keep the container segregated so its only used for fuel and not contaminated with all the other stuff that may be tempted to hitch a ride in the container. The problem came to light when it was discovered that a certain brand of automatic transmission could not tolerate even the slightest amount of antifreeze, caused the clutches to come apart :confused3:

Getting older has taken the fun of getting 5 gal. cans up to the top of the tractor. Now, I just put the hose in the can, connect up the power leads to the battery & let it rip. It gets about 90% of the fuel out & I just pour the rest in. I have a plastic cap that fits in the hose & one over the nozzle to keep out bugs etc.

right now we have 2 100gal diesel tanks with pimps on them.each tank will only fuel the 3 tractors once.so we can fuel up twice.and have 30 gal left over.

Sdiver40 and Locoweed,
Nice setups. Good examples of "work smarter, not harder."

Bigbull338,
Are those 100 gallon tanks stationary, or do you haul them? Portable fuel tanks in excess of 70 gallon capacity should be placarded for "Flammable" if you carry them on public roads. Might want to check with your state LEO on that.

As for me, more than 30 years ago, I bought a 300 gallon fuel tank with a hand pump (1 quart per stroke). My local fuel supplier delivers my diesel right to the farm.
I hate filling, hauling, and pouring fuel from 5 gallon jugs.

Don't, I let my wife or one of the kids do it.

I did the yellow 5 gallon thing for years. Got tired of it and built this. Buddy gave me 100 gallon tank, I had pump from previous RV hauling. Steel side runners also double as fork lift pick up point. Best part I save almost $.80 per gallon from local farm supplier.
