I put one on my 2000 F-250 diesel way back in about 2001. Has worked ever since! Can't remember what brand it was but it wired into the existing controller for power locks and such, no alarm. It's keyfob replaced the factory one. It wasn't a difficult install but not for the faint of heart either since I had to pull almost the entire dash to do all the wiring.

Have the Factory Dodge one on my Diesel - works great and lets the oil get flowing before I use it.

We have been installing remote starters on our vehicles for about twenty years now. I have installed a couple and had the rest done professionally. Unless you are really up to date on vehicle wiring, pay a pro to do it. The brand we have been using is Code Alarm and they are readily available on Ebay etc. I have never had one go bad on any of our vehicles. Once you have one, you will never want to be without one. Even in the summer, it's nice to get into a cool car.

Thanks for the answers, I am thinking about getting one for my 07 Tundra.

Make sure you get something with good range, 1000+ ft would be a minimum. The actual range drops a lot in parking lots with other cars around. I think the last one I got had a 2000 ft range and was great. Also by all means, let a pro install it, the new vehicles have so many anti theft devices that need to be worked around its not something that I would want to try, and I try some stuff that I shouldn't. But as I get older, I'm getting wiser..:D

You are right, I will get someone to install it.

My last two GMC's had it..Love it..Factory on mine, but the aftermarket pro-installed work every bit as good according to those that have them.

I had a Compustar with the Slice remote, Click Here, installed about a month ago. As others have said, have it professionally installed and get the most range you can afford. Two way remotes are nice as well. The Slice remote I got not only 'tells you' it sent the command but that the vehicle responded. The only thing inconvenient about my cars security system and the remote start is, when the car is remote started, it shuts off when any door is opened. There was no way to 'program' around this.

i've never seen a remote that operated in this way, not syaing yours doesn't.
that's a strange way to program the thing. on mine I can open the door, get in,
but if you do anything with any control (gear shift, brake pedal, etc.) the turck will
shut off. need to put the key in and turn to run first.

wife's car works the same way.

Just to be clear, it's not the remote start module that causes this, it's the security system in the car.

I've installed about a dozen or so in past 10-12 years Fords, GM and Mazda, (Pro-Start Canadian Tire) never had a problem yet (knock on wood) Everyone says have a pro do it. I've seen two instances of 'pros' fail, the reason being is they use those cheap ***** scotchlock connectors for tapping into existing wires because they're fast. They cut thru a good portion of the wire you're tapping into causing resistance which in turn causes heat and so on. Any I've done I solder and heat shrink every connection.
The Pro Start comes with a link to the wiring schematic page, if you get a unit that doesn't have any car specific info here's a link to a good site http://tinyurl.com/nv9o6h6....Mike

Then the person didn't properly evaluate the installer. :) I looked for online reviews, industry awards, etc., which pretty much eliminated big box stores.
