Ya, chains can get expensive in a hurry. I have $700 in my set, rears are Tellefsdal 3/8" studded, very heavy, very bitey, but last forever. Probably more chain than I really need but they make traction a non-issue. If the driveway gets icy, I can drive up and down it several times and chew up the surface enough to get it to begin to deteriorate, melt a bit, etc.
With your conditions, you could get along with something much lighter and lower cost if you needed chains occasionally. Heavy chains can be a chore to put on too.

Best traction on snow and ice [excluding chains and studs] is turf tires then R4's then ag tires. Get ag tires on ice and you can have a bad day or any tire for that matter. CJ

My turfs are great but am on the level here. I have run equipment with both ag and r4 and they can be horrible on hard pack and ice. I found r4 will slide sideways easier than ag tires.
