Thanks. How do I check to see if the glow plugs are working? When I turn the key to the first position there is a definite click coming from the engine area.
The click is the start/ignition circuit/relay(s) kicking in, It does NOT mean that your glow plugs are working. There is one plug for each cylinder and they should all heat up,(glow) for a preset (by timer, relay), period of time to preheat the combustion chamber prior to turning over the engine with the starter and creating combustion of fuel in the combustion chamber, aided by the glow plugs preheating of same. Without the preheating, under colder conditions the fuel that would otherwise be burned is subject to incomplete combustion, thus the resulting white smoke.
Re the Redline and Rotella, you can run whatever oil you want, but in my mind I'd rather have an oil specifically designed for a diesel engine in a 5w-40 diesel full synthetic using synthetic base stock, and additional synthetic and other proprietary ingredients, (than what Redline offers, a 15w-40 diesel oil), for the colder New England climate, and the price difference/easy availability of the Rotella from many local distributors. I'm sure the 5w-40 NON-diesel Redline is also a fine oil, but given the choice in either brand I would still tend to choose the diesel label product. Again, YMMV.:confused3:
I also suggest immediate purchase, or download, or both, of a service manual for your tractor. Study the glow plug circuit and learn about how it works and then fix it if it's broken. Hint: it's basically, in most systems, a timer relay and a bunch of glow plugs which are heated up by the ignition/start circuit via a position on the keyswitch which then allows amperage to pass to the busbar containing the glow plugs. If an individual glow plug is not working it will read on a VOM as an open circuit. Otherwise it will read within a certain range of resistance on the meter. When working on all cylinders it should render faster smoother starting than without it's use.
Now, do your homework, change the oil and filter, top off the antifreeze, and get the tractor out into the world and use it!:dance1:
