Stump Bucket

Had one for a while, sold it after a short time.Impossible to see what you are doing...........

That's the biggest issue I have with mine. I have to lean to the side to try and see the angle of the bucket.

   / Stump Bucket #23
See, I never had an issue with visibility, the tractor just wasn't strong enough to get the big roots out.

This is the narrowest one I was able to find in what I considered to be a quality build. I have not used it extensively yet but the initial usage seems to verify it is a good match for my 45HP, 7000# tractor. I think the problem with stump buckets and a CUT is the opening width and the angle of that opening back to the rear. The narrower the better, as there should be less resistance to be being pushed into the ground.

There are a couple of others on TBN who use this bucket to great advantage, but I do not recall there names at the moment.

If still around, you should buy it. You could flip it for $450. I've seen them sell for $500 and guys use them to transplant trees around here.

sdef, the bucket part of that one looks similar to mine at first glance. But after looking at it, I think mine is wider near the back (mounting plate) of it. Here are a couple of picks for comparison.

I'm the guy who bought TSO's stump bucket :)thumbsup:), AFAIK identical to that pictured in the OP's intro.

What I learned:
My tractor is small & light, so lack of weight & hp became obvious. I worked on a ~3" 'Chinese elm' in very sandy soil (some gravel, no loam). Even with my remarkably puny FEL I was able to break a few incomplete welds there (didn't penetrate both part & parent) and redo them. In the past, I'd pulled such with a basic brush grubber, bouncing up on 2 or 3 wheels as I raised the FEL and rocked 'em loose. I've since gone back to 'scratching' around them all with the Terramite before doing the op with the bucket OR the BG.

I find the bucket handy for 'pulling' smaller stuff (with BG & chain), and lots of other things, but it's certainly no 'easy button' for stumps without plenty of weight & muscle behind it (MUCH more than my 35hp & 3.5k lb CUT). Visibility is indeed limited with a FEL vs say a skid steer. The right tool is one thing, but IMO a stump bucket's capability will be over-rated by most of us with CUTs.

Read TSO's comments! We've been there with the same 'gadget' & if his LS wouldn't do it all either we have our own conclusions. Ripper teeth would be a plus, but be aware that a QA bracket may get horsed out of shape trying to prove something. Buy a HD version, but IMO if you don't have 50+ hp, a strong lift capability/hp (LS, Kioti, .. Mahindra?), and plenty of weight behind it you will be disappointed with o'all ability. Be prepared to do plenty of maneuvering & to get out of the seat a lot, if only to fill the four holes you wheels have dug out by spinning them, or to scratch your head wondering who can use one of these to full effect.

Go in cheap if you get a chance to try one. Erelong, you'll decide if your machine has the oomph to use the best of 'em. :2cents:

Yes. ... Imagine pushing a pyramid into the ground.

the CID stump bucket is the exact bucket that I have. I have gotten quite a bit of use out of mine, with my little R3039H (~5K# rig). I've rooted up some pretty big pine stumps, one nearly 8' long, but it took quite a bit of persistence.

What are these stump buckets supposed to do?

I have some stumps, but not sure how something like this would help.

I have several Fir stumps with some roots giving me problems, they are about 18" in diameter. The stump is about 30" in diameter.
Right now I try to dig the earth and expose the root then saw or chop them.

I am going to try and run around the stump/tree with my subsoiler first to cut any roots I can before digging with the stump bucket and see how this works. I will not be able to get as close initially, but it is a relatively easy thing to do first. Then go to work with the CID stump bucket as required.

I hope you folks have better luck on roots with the sub-soiler than I did. Yes you can twist-off a rock shaft and have to replace it. (Don't ask me how I know, ok? :ashamed: .. may have been cracked already?)

btw: A 'SawZall' run off a small generator will cut a handful of roots quicker than you can say 'time for a new bar & chain'. IIRC the blades are much cheaper than chains and change out more quickly, too. (YMMV but try before you hammer your Stihl. 6 or 10 tpi works for me to 4" or so. :2cents:)

What is a "rock shaft"?

What is a "rock shaft"?

It 'rocks' by actuating the lift piston under the seat and rotates to raise the lift arms linked to 3PH's lower arms. I had cruised into some big roots with the sub-soiler hoping they'd snap and my front end would jump a bit whenever one really 'anchored' me. Something hadda give, and somehow something did. :banghead:

It sounds like this relates to the draft control then and I will have to be more cautious when using my ROBB for things such as tearing out large grape vines, which the larger ones would anchor me and stop the tractor dead. I never thought about actually breaking something doing this. Disturbing that something substantial on a tractor would break like this, as my wheels spin in the dirt long before I thought enough stress had built up to damage anything.

Yep, I use a cordless 'SawZall' with a 9" or 12" pruning blade.

Don't have any pictures of roots, so here is the largest limb, cut with the 12" blade.

It measured 9"
