Hello
I vactioned in Sri Lanka (was born there) recently and took these pictures of a religious festival where a Deere 5047D was used to pull a wooden chariot with a Hindu deity atop. In the past many men used to pull these things, and in some festivals men still do but for longer distances a tractor is used.

Thought you all might like to see it, as it is out of the ordinary for a Deere.

I typically don't see a barefoot operator wearing a towel-like outfit either. The passenger seat on the fender is also something we would not see on a newer tractor. Thanks for posting.

You're welcome

The towel like dress is a sarong, traditional outfit for much of South Asia and also many parts of S.E. Asia.

okay...now that you say it I knew they were called sarongs. It's just been an awful long time since Asian attire has come up in conversation.

Are the fender seats factory or added on?

Worker / operator safety in much of Asia and the MidEast is non exsistent to dismal.

I was at my ancestral village and saw farmers spraying Commerical Roundup from a backpak mounted metal pump sprayer with no googles or face mask and wearing just shorts or a sarong. It's been in the news that many rural folk are suffering kidney failure and other ailements from exposure to dangerous levels of pesticide.

Another pic. I'm trying to find a picture of just the chariot.

---

The various brands of tractors most seen over there (personal observation) are, in order of frequency (high to low):
Massey Ferguson
TAFE (Indian brand)
Mahindra
Deere

Chinese brands are really making inroads now; partly because China is considered a very important ally .

Hopefully there will be improvement soon. The US has really only been safety conscious the last 40-50 years. Our equipment made in the early 1970's had none of the modern safety features either. Worker safety really didn't take off too much before then either. I used to work with old pipefitters here that talked about mixing up asbestos in tubs like redi-mix concrete to insulate pipes. A lot of them ended up with mesothelioma and lung cancer. I have to believe that in this information age some of the affected people will gradually become more informed about the hazards of what they are doing.
