How to keep 3 point from rising

If you put a ball on that drawbar, the drawbar will rotate when you try to pull anything. You would need the pin style with a farm hitch above and below for that to work. I think the fixed drawbar down below the PTO is the safest way to tow.

Right, it wasn't intended for a ball hitch, but for a way to use towed implements that had a clevis hitch, without the drawbar rising.

Have none of you guys ever seen the stay bars that go from the top link mount to the lift arm ends? They're as common as a pocket on a shirt with the 3 pt. mounted draw bar. You can even adjust them for the draw bar height you want. Take another look in the farm store and they should almost be right next to the draw bars.

Yep. Even made a set for dads 8n.

There are several ways to over come that. Here is one way CountyLine® Drawbar Lock, Cat 1 - Tractor Supply Online Store

The set we made for the 8n bolts to two outer holes of the drawbar, and then up to the toplink. Thus being bolted keeps the hitch from rotating.

No doubt that the safest way is with the fixed drawbar, if you have one. The 8n we have does not. Neither does my kubota. But the biggest thing I dont like about them are 1. IT is easier to hook and unhook the trailers with the 3PH. And 2. You cannot be as maneuverable with the fixed, as it is in closer and the tires rub on the trailer if trying to maneuver tight. We use some homemade trailers alot for firewood. They are purposely built to give sufficient tongue weight without having to fix the 3PH down. It is nice because you can just back up, raise the 3PH, and shuttle the trailer around in the woods til its full and you never even have to latch it or screw with the jack. Once the trailer is full, then we of course latch the coupler and pivot the jack back up.

I realy appreciate the input!

The tractor does not have any adjustment to prevent the 3pt from rising, there is a downward control but the upward movement is no different regardless how this is adjusted.

As noted, this grass catcher on this new sweeper is 2 1/2 times the size of the prior sweeper, so there in not much I can do to shift the load forward to increase tongue weiight, in fact since this equipment is longer it probably takes less weight to cause the 3pt to rise than the old one.

It looks like stay bars or chains offer the same result or concern depending on how you look at it. Since I have two teen age sons who help with the yard work I'm a little concerned with installing either of these items. I may understand but it's only a split second lever movement that could cause damage.

So, it looks like I have only one option which is to replace/modify the length of the tongue on the sweeper so that I can bypass the draw bar and attach to the chassis where I currently have a 2" ball, probably an additional 18".

Should not be a major change, I probably have some thin wall tubing laying around somewhere.

Perhaps a large spring would do it and still give you some safety margin.

When I put my 3pt backhoe on the Kubota I have, It has two links (like top links) that connect to the drawbar (on a bracket) and I have the same fears, that myself or someone else would move the position control for the 3pt hitch and break something. I use the sliding stop on the position control level on one side (wish there was a second on the other side, then I would be set). I will probably eventually make a locking mechanism for the position control so it can't be moved when I have the backhoe on. I am thinking a slotted bracket that bolts on and prevents movement of the lever completely...

The stay bars (I think standard issue with the early grey Fergusons) are ideal. I used them for quite a few years, having acquired a tractor and trailer that had rarely been separated. It is possible of course to forget they are attached and raise the lever, but a simple device such as hawkeye suggest immediately above should do the trick. As already shown (sorry forget the posters) locking the drawbar at horizontal with something purchased or homemade is not difficult either. With this set up I cannot see any safety issues at all.
