Eddie if the well is drilled and developed right I believe you will not need any extra depth. It should make easily 10+ gpm.

If I were to put in a 40' well, this is the method I would use. You can use your post hole augher for the first 4' then use the methods on this website.

good luck I'll be watching, seems these things can be done much cheaper than building your own for most part. Reason most people that look at doing it themselves quickly find the cost of equipment and time means you can buy the well done in a day or less and be done with it. Building your rig takes weeks or months, and costs lots more than you initially think and when done it is home built rig so selling it usually is not an option as costs to build means no one wants to even pay for the components...

If it can be done I'm sure you can do it but why would you want to unless you have a huge junk yard full of all the parts you need and tons of time with no $...

If your using a post hole gear box, find a hydraulic pump that is a speed of about 540 rpm, and then the gallons that your tractor can provide, and a full auger may not be the best many use a short winged bit, if your not careful one could stick a full auger

if all else fails one could do or use a bailer to get the spoils out, as in a cable rig, one would have to pull the auger out,

those twisty post hole diggers, I know a guy who drilled a shallow well with one of them I think he had some type of ladder to reduce the times he had to break down the pipe in the process of removing the dirt.

so one could use the auger and only dig about 3 foot, and then pull the unit up and dump the dirt, much like pulling a well,

if one made a boring bucket, basically a pipe with a auger head that will hold the cuttings to be removed,

You guys are definitely causing me to rethink the wisdom of this. Before I do anything, I'm planning to talk to the pros and see what they will charge. A friend of my parents used to do it, but he retired and isn't in good health anymore.

There are a couple of people on the east TX CL who are advertising a DYI rig rental for $1000/well. Might be possible to talk them into a lower price for such short wells.

Thank you, I just watched both his video's on youtube and just seeing the machine in operation has me doubting the thought of making this even more.

IMO, the two biggest issues with making your own from a backhoe would be getting enough water flow into the hole and keeping the hole vertical as the backhoe boom went up and down.
