We spread compost and sawdust over our gardens, how roughly do they spread over an area? Is there a gentler alternative? We'll often go through after a crop has come up to mulch them in and I'd prefer an easier and more self reliant way than one person on the FEL spreading the stuff out.
Thanks

I am pretty sure sawdust would be no problem and well broken down compost should be ok as well. Most manure spreaders have adjustable speeds on the beaters to vary the rate of unloading.

Ha, Ha. I'm sorry forgottenben but I've never heard of a manure spreader being referred to as gentle. I've sure heard a lot of other descriptions. As wolftree indicated if the manure is well composted - ie dried out, aged - the manure spreader does not need the force to spread and can be turned down. If you are trying to spread fresh, hot & steaming cow poo then it can get pretty wild. This can easily happen if you are attempting to spread manure from the bottom of a large pile.

I laugh when reading Oosik's post. Thinking of a manure spreader spreading remembering the time I ate Some salmonella laden chicken. That chicken violently exited my body from both ends with extreme prejudice. That is the only way I have seen a manure spreader in action. Stuff flying every which way with great flinging. Limited experience though watching a spreader in action.

i use a manure spreader 2 times a year..they spread far and wide. not gentle. They also spread in clumps and not evenly.

If you want a controlled, even spread of finely-sized manure, you'll need to look to design alternatives, as I did when i researched this a while back.

Here's a link for one example in the US: Home of the Stablers Rotary Manure Spreader

And here's another relevant post:

I'd be grateful if anyone could point to one single advantage of the conveyor belt paddle ones that seem to be the industry standard, except maybe their speed........in doing the job badly.

well the benifit of the conveyor belt one is when you have straw in the manure pile. the unit with the stainless steel drum would be less than useless to spread that. My manure pile also contains straw and uneaten hay. wont fit thru any hole, even after 1 year digesting in a manure pile.

Thanks, I didn't think of that. My wife's horses aren't stabled and she picks up the manure from the paddock in a trailer and leaves it in an open bay about 12 foot by 12 foot by 4 foot until it gets too full, in spite of a neighbor taking quite a lot for his gardens etc.

So, then the only way to get rid of excess is to put it back into the paddocks, but with the clumps broken up by the spreader so it is much finer and can absorb into the ground much faster.

If you need to spread hay and manure though, I can see it might not be not a viable option. I expect the manure would still break up and get spread, but most of the hay would stay in the drum.

The conveyor belt one we tried didn't impress. It pulled along well enough behind a ride-on mower, but the paddles threw the manure eveywhere. I'd be tempted instead to put the manure on the flat tray of out old farm truck and drive around letting it fall off as I drove. Get the speed about right and it would do pretty much the same job and i wouldn't get covered in the stuff in the process.

I wonder if there is a way to shroud around the paddles to help control direction / placement... ??? Just a thought.

IMG_0345.jpgwhat i end up doing, is i use my team to pull the manure spreader and spread 6 month pile of aged manure, 2 times a year. then i follow it up with pulling a spring tooth harrow, with the tractor, over the spread manure to help break it up and spread it evenly. works great, and also breaks up the horse manure piles that the horses have dumped in the 10 acre pasture during the summer. helps the grass grow nicely.

i like making the horses spread their own piles....very satisfying hehe.manure 3.jpgspreader1.jpgspreading poo 2.jpg

I have a gently used spreader that I would part with, if the price was right.:D :confused3:

what was it used as....a planter haha

Nothing that a little paint will not take care of. May want to air the tires & oil the chains.
Then its ready to spread. :D:cool2:

"That Thing" Are you insinuating that my fine piece of machinery is not up to snuff, or ready for action. :confused3:

I am assuming that you are not going to make me a reasonable offer. :(
