Tractor
Still looking...
Hi everyone. I'm about to purchase a 1025r with FEL and 60 deck. The tractor has been sitting outside at the dealer now for four to five weeks up here in Vermont. We've had hot sunny days as well as lots of rain. I've always stored my equipment inside, and the thought of this new tractor sitting out for over a month before delivery makes me cringe. What are your thoughts should I ask the dealer to order a factory fresh unit which will take a month or so, or just take this machine? How much weathering damage has been done?.. Anything to be concerned about?

I wouldn't worry but then again my tractors sit outside all day, every day.

im glad you asked because I have a quick story to tell. When I was in the market for a cabbed machine a year and a half ago, they had exactly what I was looking for on the lot brand new with less than 10 hours on it. I noticed the steering wheel and other accents in the cab that were supposed to be black were turning white from sun damage. I declined even after they said they would take 500 off of the machine. I had them order me a new machine and had to wait 2 months for it. It was worth the wait for me. I was just at the dealer the other day and saw a new 5m series sitting on the lot brand new with the plastic on the seats and it was fading as well. Doesn't make any sense. I guess before delivery to the new owner, some dealers throw armorall on everything to hide it

Good question & something I honestly wouldn't have considered. Mine came new (not off the lot) but I was always noting that the "previously loved" rigs seats were always cracked from wear & sun/weather damage. I just put it down to age, which on retrospect was dumb due to the extreme UV exposure in Australia & Tasmania in particular.

My rigs are now housed in a new 5 Bay shed which is South facing to keep the sun off them when not in use.

Is this a legitimate concern? (other than cosmetics), for you owners...and I mean "always garaged" to "never been anywhere else, but under the sky", guys/gals.

Isn't a tractor built to be pretty much, weather-resistant?

That is the conclusion (that being outside is fine) that I've come to, after reading on the site for the last year.

And I totally understand the op's (or anyone's) wanting a "shiny, new machine", I do.

yeah that's what a lot of people say on here anyhow. Open station tractors your kinda screwed but cab tractors you can prevent premature UV damage with tint. I use tint and RV sunshades that allow you to see out but not see in at all. Both block about 90 percent UV combined. Plus, on a 100 degree day, the A/c freezes the inside of the cab on the number 1 setting. Very comfortable.

You don't need to worry about rain getting on them since you store them upside down, right? Joking. I hope to some day visit your wonderful country.

I'd want to store it inside also.

I'd say order a new one so you still get that fresh tractor smell.

Yes, I get it and won't worry about it. It's going to bake in the sun anyway as I work it three to four days a week. And I do have lots of projects so it's going to get dings as well. I was mostly concerned about the torrential downpours we've had over the past month and it getting waterlogged and rusted. We've really had driving rain. But I'm sure it can handle that. With all that said though, it would piss me off to no end if I open up the hood and see the beginnings of rust everywhere.

Several years back I was interested in an almost new 4110 with 10 hours on it. It had been sitting on the dealer's lot for about 10 months. Man was that thing faded and rusted. It looked awful almost like a vintage 1950's tractor kept outside all its life. They were asking too much money for it and it was really too big for my needs.

I don't know of any dealers in my area with covered storage or sales lots, not unusual for Kubota, John Deere, New Holland, Massey Ferguson, Kioti etc. to sit our in the weather in a crate or assembled.

Personal preference. Some folks want their tractors clean and dry, others not so much. You get to choose.
