I have a Ford 1600 where I recently replaced the switch and the starter Solenoid assy. When I turn the key on the switch the starter turns over as it should. If I turn the switch to off the starter keeps turning. From everything I can tell the switch is fine and is wired correctly. I can disconnect the starter wire from the Solenoid and turn the key and I get 12V. when I turn the key to off the voltage drops. This tells me the switch is ok. Could it be a starter or Solenoid issue.

It sounds like the solenoid is sticking.

I just tried a brand new Solenoid and it did exactly the same. Turn the switch and the engine turns over but turn off the switch and it keeps trying to turn over until I disc0nnect the battery.I am thinking it may be the starter but I don't know why. I can disconnet the switch from the solenoid and short the terminals on the solenoid and the starter turns over. When I remove the screw driver it still turns over until I disconnect the battery.

The switch should cut power to the starter in the off position.

I do not even have the starter connected to the solenoid and the starter still runs all the time once engaged.

how is power getting to the starter?

I don't have a tractor like yours, but I can try to help.

EDIT: I pm'ed Soundguy. He's great with Ford's.

The only wires currently attached to the solenoid is the hot wire directly from the battery and the wire directly to the starter. I removed the starter from the fly wheel housing and shorted the terminals on the solenoid. The starter engages but stays engaged even when the terminals are no longer shorted.

For some reason the solenoid is sticking. Are you sure you have the right solenoid.
