Hydraulic Filter hard to get off!

Trying to change the Hydraulic/transmission fluid on my DK35, I cant get the filter off. Poked a hole in the filter trying to get it off. Anybody have any suggestions?

It's a common situation on a Kioti's first oil change. The filters are ridiculously tight. I used a 1/2" ratchet nylon strap wrench the first time. One of those chain filter wrenches would also work.

They're fine once you get them off and reinstall as per Kioti's instructions. I wish they would follow their own instructions for the first install.

Yes, it is.. on the first one I poked a hole thru it with 1/2 inch all thread and managed to turn it a bit.. BUT I would suggest you go buy a chain wrench and use that. Save your self the hassle.. They are put on by a 900 pound gorilla for some reason.. Don't put the replacement one on that tight!

I just removed all the spin-on filters on my Yanmar with a large pair of channel lock pliers, maybe the same would work for you.

i 3x the post about the adjustable filter wrench. The auto parts store sold me a real nice one that uses a standard 1/2" ratchet wrench to help in the removal. worked great. ill have to get a pic of it.

Holy smokes! Broke the chain wrench! I poked a hole with a screw driver, almost broke it! I dont think I ever seen a filter this hard to get off. Crazy. Thanks all!

These strap wrenches don't look like much but the one I have owned for several years has never seen a filter it couldn't handle. I have had it crush some filters getting them off but it always gets them off.

ill admit i wasnt too impressed at first. but after i broke my home depot strap wrench, i got this one out and it took the filter right off. no issues at all. im sold now

Yeah, welcome to the club. After trying every type of filter wrench known to man, I just pounded the biggest screwdriver I owned into the thing and then used my foot while holding onto the tractor step. Took every ounce of strength I had in my leg to break that @*#! free.

I think that gorilla works at multiple places. I have had a few new cars over the years and all the filters were on supertight. Ended up getting a wrench like this.

Had one of those, and could not get it off with it.. couple of reasons, one the filter is huge, and you have a limited window between the step and the tire to operate in , and because the filter is huge, it just barely will go on, and it leave the handles so far apart you cant get your hands in a good position to twist it off.. The chain wrench is the best., the kind you put your 1/2 inch ratchet into and start twisting.

Same issue with my CT445.

The solution was to take a utility knife and cut through the paint between the top of the filter housing and the rubber washer.

Next spray the area cut liberally with WD-40. Took about 3 treatments with WD-40 waiting 15 min between applications before the filter began to slowly loosen

For my old DS3510, I got the Filter wrench which is like a cap for the end that you use a 1/2" breakerbar in. I then proceeded to twist the 1/2" plate off the end of the cap. Drilled and then riveted the plate back on the cap with 5/32 monel rivets. Tried again and the filter gave up it ghost and came off as it had a lost cause. The longer handle of the breakerbar gave more leverage A MIGHTY HEAVE gave me the win.....:thumbsup:
Be interesting to see how the filter on the DS4510 comes off when it comes due.:scratchchin:

Does anybody know how much fluid to put back in (2004 DK35)? I put about 8.5-9 gallons and ran the tractor for about 3-4 mins and it looked like it was right at the bottom of the acceptable range. I thought I read 7.? gallons.
I dont have a manual!

The manual says 11.6 gal.
My 2001 model DK 35 (same as the 2004 model) usually takes around 10 or 11 gal on a fluid/filter change

It makes a difference.
I get an extra 1/2 gal or gallon extra out by draining the finals

Strap wrench. Looks like a piece of seat belt and a piece of 3'' long 1/2 square tubing. One size fits all.
