i like to let the tractor tires do my compaction. I will turn the scrape blade around to back drag as i go. I just drive up and down the road, moving over one tire track width at a time, letting the scrape blade drag as I go. I will repeat until I cant see any more compaction taking place under the tractor tires and the finished product is baby butt smooth.

Those of you thinking about a vibratory roller, how are you planning to do it? I've been thinking about one for awhile and my thoughts are to run off the PTO to a shaft turning an out-of-balance disk near or behind the roller axle. Anyone have any thoughts about how much out of balance it should be? Or better ways to do it?

Also, I have slopes here as well and have to deal with that, very little level land. So, I plan to put brakes on the roller. I can do it with the hydraulic ports running a cylinder that presses a piece of tire against the drum. I also have brake lights on the tractor so i've been thinking about tapping into those to run an electric solenoid to power the drum brake.

Hi Hammy here is the thread on building the roller & sheep's foot / compactor. Lots of false starts, lots of work, but still fun. Learn from my mistakes.
