I think anything you do would be just fine, but for me, if the oil looked dark at all, I'd change it and view the generator duty as a neat way to clean the engine internals via oil change.

Its a diesel, so it will be dark as soon as you start the engine...

Is the valvoline a big improvement over the rotella?

couldn't tell you.

on regular changes in temperate.. probably neither better than dino oil

though I giuess the syn's are better film strength at startup, and have some better heat qualities.

in cold weather.. might be nice for the cold pour point winter wight.. etc.

yep, unless new, rebuilt, or heavily flushed / changed in rapid sucession.. it goes dark pretty fast..
