PTO generator

The alternators in my (limited) experience do a fine job of making pulsating DC. They have internal diodes. Maybe some have external diode bridges, and therefore technically are making AC.

We are picking nits here.

For a PTO inverter to work, the tractor's govenor would have to be somehow tied closed loop with the electric load, that would be difficult. Two posible improivements would be: 1- If a maker would make a pto genny with double the normal speed increase ratio, or even better, a selectable one, so small tractors could run normal rpm's. 2- The owner can make a pulley, or sprocket speed doubler between the pro shaft and the genny shaft, and run the tractor at half rpm's.

That's a good point that I had considered as well. To take real advantage, there would have to be some feedback to the governor - not likely.

So all things considered, the only advantage to this hypothetical PTO inverter generator is that RPMs wouldn't be _quite_ so critical to maintain an exact 60Hz output.

Way off the chart in terms of cost/benefit I suppose for a PTO device.

Never mind...

The corrrect term "inverter" applies to electronics that produces ac from dc, not the other way around.

No an inverter is a device that inverts.

Usually an AC to DC device is called a converter but this is not a hard rule.

A 'Y' is formed by three winding of an alternator with a common center terminal, each winding is one phase, as the alternator turns current passes through each winding.

Luckily, nobody really comes to a tractor forum for serious electronic advise, so you can make up the meaning of an inverter to be what ever you want. Regarding the "Y"... you didn't answer my question.

The diodes in the 'Y' rectify the AC, in a car alternator their purpose is to enable the the battery to be charged with the resultant DC.

I disagree, I think people here do seek electronic advice, that's why they ask questions. So are you saying that you're not looking for answers? Because it seems to me that you're seeking electronic advice.
