16mm Combinaation Wrench

Why is it that you can't buy a 16mm combination wrench without buying a set? It happens that 2 of the 3 drain plugs on my MF2615 are 16mm. They are available as individual sockets at Sears but not as individual wrenches. They've got 15mm and 17mm but not 16. I wound up buying an offset wrench in 16 and 18mm which should work fine.

Just about any auto parts store on the planet sells open stock wrenches. I'd be surprised if your favorite big-box home improvement store didn't, too. Fact of the matter is, I just went on Sears' site and there are no fewer than four 16MM wrenches that can be purchased individually for under $11.10 each, not counting the more expensive ratcheting box end combination wrench.

You should be able to go into any good auto parts store and buy a single wrench but, sets are much cheaper than individual items purchased one at a time.

I know that someone will be angry about this but a 5/8 is VERY close. If you have a six point wrench there is little chance that you would round anything. 5/8 is 15.875 mm

Which really means that a 16MM wrench works a heck of a lot better in place of a 5/8" than does a 5/8" in place of a 16mm. BTDT.

Like Chuckie said, 5/8" will work perfectly. I personally wish the US would just adopt the metric system and move on. It is so much easier to work with!

Craig, we did adapt the metric system a long, long time ago, when it comes to money. They just forgot to tell us we were using metric.

So that is why a dollar is only worth 10% of what it was 10 years ago? Now I understand!

There was a German standard DIN that most of Europe used, and a Japanese standard for which I cannot remember the acronym, and then ISO or International Standard. Then along came auto makers who found that by decreasing the distance across the flats on some bolts they would work quite well and save money. 16mm is an ISO standard and not sure why tool makers leave that size out of so many sets. Wherever I travel I find a mixture of metric and English tools in mechanic's tool boxes because hydraulic fittings are often still in English wrench sizes world around, and mechanics everywhere lack 16 mm wrenches so they use 5/8 inch. Something that baffles me is why my made in India King Kutter plow that I use for cleaning up odds and ends has inch hardware while all of our made in America John Deere stuff has metric. If the major companies switched to metric in the 80's, why do short liners stay inch even if they source from metric countries?

Am I in the minority here? I'd feel underprivileged if I didn't have multiple sets of SAE and metric wrenches and socket sets. Too much stuff needs fixin' that has either or both. When I swapped engines in my 95 Wrangler it took SAE, metric, internal and external Torx and a bunch of patience.

its rare to have a 16mm nut,typically the metric fasteners are even numbers up to 14mm,then they switch over to the odd numbers,typically 17and 19,then go back to even,starting at 22mm.Those are the most common.

I seen a new one today. The 3/8 american standard threaded bolts holding the brush guard on my 2720 needed metric wrenches to remove. I found that out when I replaced the bolts with an i-bolt and put the nuts back on for strapping it down to the trailer .

Like Cub suggested. They are all over ebay. Prices vary with brands. Do you know any mechanics. Snap On probably has one they could buy for you off the truck.

My set of metric combination wrenches goes from 5mm to 15mm. My first Massey was built here and was all ISO, my second Massey was a combination of both and was built in Turkey, my new machine was built in India and seems to be all metric. I have 3/8 metric sockets up to 23mm including a 16mm.
I don't think they hate me, what a lovely thing to say to someone.

5/8 is the same as 16 mm I interchange them all the time when I need 2 wrenches on a bolt. 11/16 is 17 mm fwtw another interchange 5/16 and 8 mm another those are the common sizes I work with every day. hth
