Is there any way to re-route the drive to make a less abrupt turn, perhaps a long slow curve?

No, not really. It is built on a ridge line. Unfortunately, the guy that built the drive banked it against gravity instead of with gravity. Ya know, when you drive on a nice curvy road, it banks to keep the car in it's lane. Well, they felt that it would be wiser to have the water flow into the the hill instead of on the side. Hard to describe but it's all wrong and to fix it, I would need about 100 tons of fill dirt and then I would have to regravel from scratch.
