Tractor
John Deere 1026R
I was wondering if anybody has noticed their tractor drinking the fuel? It seems that I get about 2 1/2 hours (hour meter) out of 5 gallons of fuel. This is my first diesel mower and it just seems like alot fuel compared to my 445 I sold. The tractor seems to be okay and has plenty of power so I figured I would ask and see if its just me.

I don't own a JD 1026 but I do own a JD2305 TLB. It's fuel consumption is a little less than one gallon per hour. I have larger tractors that do not consume two plus gallon per hour. That kind of fuel consumption sounds like you are running a JD 8430 under constant full load. Deere's specs say 1.4 gph per hour at 100% load for a 1026R. I don't know about you but I find it hard to operate at full load for a constant time frame of one hour when using a tractor.

Gator 6x4,I know they list those specifications for most tractors, but those to me are just lab test, not real world. I know are 9420T's are rated around 20 gph, but they,
normally drink around 25 to 30 gph. But thanks for the information on your tractor I would think they would be pretty close.

What kind of work were you doing? At 5 gallons per 2.5 hours, there may be something wrong with your tractor or your measuring device.

Here lately alot of tilling and mowing, but when tilling I only run about half throttle. I have put 10 hours on it in the last 2 weeks and it seems like every time I get it out I have to fill it up. I thought it seemed a bit excessive. I did notice the front rim and grill guard are turning black but I figured that was normal.

I might question tilling at half throttle. They don't have a turbo do they? I would still crank it up, even I the soil is easy to get through.

You might be loading the tractor more by not running at pto speed. Thus you would use more fuel because of the load.

I don't know about tillers but on brusjlh hogs you are suppose to run at rated rpm due to shear bolts so that they actually snap when hitting something hard.

My 2520 mowing with mmm gets about .75g/hr brush hogging about 1g/hr or worse.

Heavy black smoke is because the engine is getting too much fuel. Too much fuel can be from bogging it down with the tiller at half speed.

Really shouldn't see black smoke but on occasion, like when you'd hit some hard ground and it really has to work.

I can trench with the backhoe on my BX24 for 15 to 20 hours on a tankful... less than 5 gallons.
You're using far too much fuel.

Cannot speak to 1026R from experience. However on my 2520 I consistently get slightly more than 1 1/2 hours (hourmeter) from a gallon of fuel. Tractor used for mowing, brushogging, snow blowing, and loader work. This has held for 1000 hours. I also get black around the exhaust outlet, but never see any black smoke.
Something is wrong in your case. Start by verifying accuracy of hourmeter and keep close track of fuel added. If your initial estimate proves correct, have your dealer find the problem before the problem manifests itself in something major.

I wonder if the 1026R has a tach timer? Tach timers record usage time as 1/2 hours used if operated below 2000 RPM. If equippeed with a tach timer your 2.5 hours would equate to five hours in real time and put fuel consumption at about one gallon per hour which sounds right.

I think the next time I get the tractor out I will use my stop watch on phone and compare it to my hour meter. I think it would be somewhat close. Then I will report back. I do what to thank everybody for their feedback I really appreciate it.

Well I got some seat time this weekend, without any good results. I went to the dealer Friday to borrow a 60 inch seeder and the tractor would barely pick it up. I talked to service manager about the fuel use and the hydraulics problems, he said when you get done we will bring it in to look at it. But to make a long story short the tractor was still drinking fuel and by Sunday night it would barely pull it self to the barn. So to the shop it goes, I will post the finds later this week.

Well this what they found, alot of silicone sucked up in the transmission sump screen. This might make a differences in the fuel consumption. I guess I will find out when they get it back together.

My 1206 uses aprox 1-1.5 gallon per hour.

I have a 1023E, which is only slightly different than your 1026R and I use it strictly for mowing. I've been using mine for 3 months and never had any issues with fuel consumption. I average just over 1 GPH. I always run my mower at 2000 to 2100 RPMs (engine speed). No black smoke or evidence of "soot" anywhere.

Well I think the OP found the issue. Hydraulic pump clogged up would probably require more fuel to pump thus worse fuel economy.

So I got some seat time yesterday. I ran for about 4 hours and didn't even use half a tank of fuel. I guess the clogged up pump was the problem. I'm glad to see it fixed and hope no one else has this problem.

How about that. Glad to hear they took a serious look and were able to solve the problem.

Where did the silicone come from? Scraps of a gasket sealant??

S219 It was from the factor assembly, the rear end is all sealed with silicon.
