Today I strung up a short solar electric fence to hopefully protect our corn from the racoons this year. I squatted down by one of the corner posts and noticed a couple insects flying around me. Initial thought was @#$ biting flies as they'd been bugging me all day long. But they weren't landing on me, just sort of hovering around me. I decided to stand up and step back. That's when I realized they were yellow jackets and I was squatting directly over the entrance to their nest !!! That really could have ended badly for me.

About an hour later, I went to retie my shoe and found a yellow jacket hanging/stuck on my sock, between my sock and jeans.

Yellow jackets don’t like compactors. I found that out the hard way.

Go out tonight with about 8 ounces of gasoline in a jar or tin can and just dump it on the nest. Don't stand around, just walk up and dump it. Don't light it. They will all be dead tomorrow.

I've used Diesel too with good results.

You sure got lucky, YJ usually don't give me that much quarter.

An occasionl sting is part of outdoor living. All the above methods work well for eradication, although if you had said they were bumblebees. (Pollinaters) instead of yellow jackets I'd advocate letting them alone.
