Air filter change, wow!

Do you know the source of the article? It could be the filter manufacturer's son in law. Just a skeptical thought. Most if not all marketing is fear based.

Check the source from the link given. Here, I'll make it easy for you:"Clint Schroer is the off-highway communications manager for Cummins Inc., based in Columbus, Ind." This magazine is a reputable trade magazine, not some fly-x-night rag...
You're welcome to do whatever you want with your tractor's filters including running them through the spin cycle and the dryer high heat if you so choose...
I just report the news, I don't make it....
I do my best to present relevant info for use by all to help people get up to speed with their equipment, rather than doing things based on erroneous info.

My dealer said to blow the air filter from the inside-out as blowing it from the outside-in will only cause the particles to embed deeper into the filter. I bought me a telescoping blow nozzle for my air compressor at Harbor Freights. Does anyone use a shopvac to vaccum out the filter vs. blowing it off?

I shove the nozzle of the leaf blower into the filter and go to full throttle to backwash the filter. Won't clean the stain though, only caked on deposits.

400 hours is the interval. I could swear it was less.

Replacement wix brand air filter is 44$ from our local schucks/oreilleys.

Our owner's manual directs us to replace (not clean) the air filter once per year.

It wasn't a personal attack just a "skeptical comment.

If you're referring to the 'comment' you made regarding the trade mag article on air filter maintenance, it may not have been a 'personal attack' BUT it wasn't helpful to cast doubt on something you could easily find, the author's name- simply by actually reading the article, AND it has nothing to do with 'marketing' or fear mongering.

Man I cant believe what I am reading here. First off, no way a stopped up AIR cleaner would make an engine run hot. If it cant get air, it is going to run rich and rich means cooler. Stopped up radiator from grass seeds, YEP.
When working in dusty conditions like mowing fields or working dirt, the air cleaner should be cleaned daily.
Black filter paper is not a reason to throw away a filter. Check the filter by shining a flash light on it and viewing the opposite side. You can see if it has holes or if it is stopped up. They are made to be cleaned with compressed air, just dont put the tip right against it. The filter is going to be the color of your dirt, if your dust is brown or black, then the filter will be slightly brown or black even when cleaned.
Your owners manual should give you a good work description for cleaning the air cleaner filter with most telling you to tap the filter on a tire to remove the majority of crude in the folds of paper, then use compressed air with the tip 10" or so from the paper. As said, after cleaning check it with a flash light or shop light bulb to make sure it isnt damaged. Unless the external filter is damaged and allows dirt to pass to the inside filter, the internal filter may never need replacing. I have never seen one get dirt or black anything on the internal filter. Most of them can be washed also with soapy water- follow mfg, directions on this though as some may not be washable, but again every one I have ever seen is washable but dont wash it every time it is dusty, there is no need to wash unless they get oily or greasy like from a busted hydraulic hose that sprays oil into the air intake.
I think someone said they blow thru the inside using a leaf blower. I have never tried that so I wont comment on that, but compressed air will clean them and not damage. I have used the same filter on farm tractors for over 5000 hours and never had to replace it. As long as your internal filter is clean each time, you know you exterior one is doing its job. Black smoke from the exhaust when the motor is not lugging is a sign you went too long without cleaning, that and noticeable loss of power.

For those of you that want to replace filters, go ahead and buy new ones every time they look black or dirty. The filter companies love you, but these are not like throw away automotive filters that cost $5 each. The reason they are 30-60 bucks each( or even more) is because they are better quality and meant to be cleaned and reinstalled - even washed and reinstalled.

"Richer" mixture are hotter in a compression ignition engine. there maybe some evaproatibve cooling but diesel have very low volatility so it isn't that big a factor. You are thinking of rich mixtures causing charge cooling in spark ignition engines. Spark ignition engines run a relatively constant fuel air ratios and power is proportional to air flow which is throttled to control power output.

In comression ignition engine. the airflow at at speed is a maximum because ther is no throttle plate, so the fuel is used to control power and the fuel/air ratio varies widely. Peak gas temperature = f(fuel/air ratio) so when the fuel air ratio increases, either by a reduction in airflow or an increase in fuel flow, the peak gas temperture in diesel increases. The airflow is restricted by the dirrty filter and causes gas temperatures to increase as well as the power to drop because of reduced airflow.

Perhaps... but most marketing does.

Ron

What r u talking about? The subject of this thread is air filters, the article addresses that from a professional's POV. U may be hung up on 'marketing' but again its irrelevant in this conversation.

And....a clogged air filter causes negative pressure (vacuum) in the crank case and can draw oil up into the combustion chamber. Continued operation this way can cause a variety of problems leading to early engine wear and more serious damage, not to mention your carbon footprint will grow 3 boot sizes.
