I have numerous books about tree identification but still draw a blank on this one, it is the only tree of it's type I have. Central Michigan area, it's about 40 feet tall. Thanks.

Try :

MSUE Portal

Not sure what county you are in, but most seem to have a forester.

Wouldn't it be easier if they had name tags "My name is Fred"

The weird thing is, I can identify every other tree we have (Black Walnut, Sycamore, Box Elder, a half dozen types of maples and numerous types of spruce and fir) but NOT this one....

The leaves and fruiting bodies look like cherry from the photo or a similiar species. Since it has already leafed is another indicator. Of course it is always easier to identify in person. Most serviceberries (shadbush) do not get that tall and the fruit stalk is usually shorter. Of course being by itself, it could be some ornamental planted years ago. That is always a challenge when you go into someone's yard and they ask "What is this?" and it is a non-native species.:)

Looks like it could be a black cherry tree. I'm guessing those buds turn into bunches of white flowers. Have you noticed if those develops small green balls early summer that start turning dark mid-late summer?

If I'm seeing it right, it looks like some type of dogwood or elm.

This tree is well over 600 feet from any dwelling and is in the same row as a group of 80+ year old black walnuts (seen in the background) and I have never seen any fruit. Appreciate all the replies so far !!

It looks like my black cherry, very soft wood..

Pretty sure black cherry would be considered a hardwood. Use it quite a bit for firewood, definitely not soft.

Black Cherry is considered a hard wood and is going for pretty darn good money if it is a veneer quality specimen.

Dug out a REALLY thick tree book, and it appears this one I illustrated cannot be a black cherry as the undersides of the leaves lack the "hairy" fringed midrib on the leaf undersides. The only other type of cherry I can locate information on with the same narrow leaves is the fire (pin) cherry but his tree is much taller than the 25-30 foot height those normally grow to. It cannot be a dogwood or an elm because their leaf shapes are very different from my tree.

I am 99.9 % sure its it's a Choke Cherry tree.... There nasty and stain everything, especially after the berries have been consumed by the birds!

Looks like Cherry to me. I have a lot of them well over 50 ft high. You don't see much fruit because the birds eat it. That is propably how it got there, transported by a bird. In the spring you should get little white flowers with petals only about 3/8" long.

Awful big for choke cherry, and those leaves don't look mature yet. Choke cherry leaves will also have hairs on the underside.

Looks like every large black cherry I've ever seen.
