L5740 smoke at start up

   / L5740 smoke at start up #11
I have 62 hrs on my 5740 and i took it it in at 35hrs or so because of the smoking and rough running when cold starting because i had a 4740 and it did none of this and they told me it is normal because of the EGR with the turbo.
Plug it in works the best.

Mine does the same, but starts a lot smoother with less smoke if I plug it in. I don't understand how this is better for emissions. I can fog out my 36' x 44' pole barn if I don't plug it in first. I've never seen a newer diesel car or truck do this?

Subsequent research has told me that because of the emission crap (egr) etc the timing on these engines is retarded to the point to where they start like crap. As soon as warranty is off I plan to remove the EGR and advance the timing back to18* .

If one removes/plugs the line to the egr, does that take the place of physically removing it?

Also, what exactly is involved to "advance the timing back to18". (Being a Mr. Badwrench as it were.)

Yes although you still have the apparatus with antifreeze circulating through it.

You need to take off the injection module and remove a shim.

Well I owned a GL4240 and now a GL5740 and I can tell you they are totally different when it comes to starting. The 4240 was smooth on cold starts but the 5740 smokes black when cold and idles rough for a few seconds. I've never noticed white smoke. Mine has 54 hours on it. Glad I put the exhaust stack on it

What the heck is the 'injection module'? You mean the pump???

I can't warm to these new mortors that don't smoke. I from the old school that.... If there is no smoke, there is no fire and no fire, no power................

My M9 smokes when it starts, when cold rattles a bit and smokes (I don't preheat it, ever...) and when I throttle it, blows a nice telltale stream of soot.... It better.... I like contributing to global waeming.....

So does my 105......

Yep the pump, that thingy with the injector lines attached. It comes out as a module.
I too am old school and think a diesel should smoke. Although I am amazed at how much these 'low emission' engines smoke.

Mine smokes at start up... I have just over 300 hours. I start it... let it rumble, for a couple minutes and go...
Don't worry about it.. Just let it warm up for a little bit before you work it hard.

Started my L5740 yesterday @ 15 degrees cycled the plugs twice and it started with a mighty cough, blew black, greyish smoke then cleaned up and ran find. Hope it starts in 10 years the same way...
