My dad and I decided we had enough of splitters that were slow and wouldn't go thru the big gnarly stuff. So we built this! The beam is 10 by 10, the ram was from a Cat pan, the engine is a wisconsin VP4- 31hp. The pump is a 24 gpm from a MF loader. There is a cylinder to raise and lower the ram. Yes, the reservoir is a milk can. And, no, I did not know that the pump could be reconfigured for opposite rotation before I built that chain drive! Oh well... It has worked flawlessly for the last 3 years since completion.

Frankensplitter! That one should make all other log splitters sit on the porch and just watch how it's done lol! Good job.

Thanks, everyone for the kind words! We snicker at the cheap splitters at lowes and tractor supply. My wife says I'm a splitter snob now! (No malice intended toward smaller machines)

So far, we haven't encountered anything that has noticeably made it grunt- Just walks thru anything we throw at it. Yesterday we were splitting up some knotty shagbark hickory. We say some nails in it when cutting it up, and (oddly enough) didn't hit any with the saw. After splitting a piece near the nails, we noticed a length of CHAIN in the wood- but the splitter broke right thru that too.

A friend of mine's splitter saw combo with 20 HP Kohler twin. Not as pretty and it doesn't tip for vertical splitting.

oldnslo- neat setup! I was going to put a pressure gauge on too, but decided against it, reasoning that it may be a distraction- I'm kind of attached to my extremities! The filter is LARGE too- We at first used the size that tractor supply sells, but the pump flows too much volume, and burst it in short order. We took a hydraulic fluid bath that day!:ashamed:

We too are big fans of buzz saws. Here is a shot of ours- see if you can spot the non-stock upgrades!
