3 pt hitch wood splitter how many tons?

So if you have one with a pto pump of it own will it produce more tons than one without that just runs from my 30 hp tractor ? and would it have a faster cycle time?

Depends on how much psi and gpm the pump is compaired to your tactors psi and gpm.

PSI determines force
GPM determines speed

Jeff,

Your 2950 should have around a 7 GPM flow rate which should run a splitter fine - maybe a tad slow but it will work just fine.

I have a 3 PT with my B21 run off the BH connection (two hyd pumps) splitter from Doug at Ramsplitter with a outboard tray after the head that catches the big pieces - I rest the large chunks on that while spliiting.

It works well - the GPM will dictate the speed of the ram mostly - I wouldnt be so concerned about the tonnage.

Here's an older pic of my setup - mounted on the FEL so I can use my BH with Thumb to lift and cut the logs then swap lines and cut. I cut about a half cord then split it.

Also that front Y leg is held in with a pin so remove that using the FEL drop it to the ground for the big oak pieces.

well according to the tractor sales place mine has a gpm of 7 to 8 gpm.He did say though if you got one that has it's own pto pump it can supply more oil faster that the tractor itself.

I also have a home built thumb on the fel myself ( i did not build it though ).I assume I could use the lines to run the thumb to run the splitter? That way I could also keep my bh attached and would not have to remove it to run the splitter on the rear 3pt hitch ?

Wallenstein has a PTO pump option. Saw a WX 370 withone.

Yes, you can use your thumb hyd to power your splitter.

As far as tonnage, depends on the wood you have to split.

3 in cyl and 1.5 shaft, 2500 psi, = 17, 671 lbs

4 in, 2 in shaft-------------------= 31,416 lbs

5 in, 2.5 -------------------------= 49,087 lbs

That sounds as thought I should save that info for future use. So if I know the cyl / barrel size I can know what tons to expect?

Thanks JJ for the "tonnage/size" info. I would agree using the ports already there for the splitter - just put some disconnects and you have a nice setup. Do you have a thumb on the hoe? That would make for a nice setup..

When I got my splitter I had them upgrade to the 4" cylinder 2" shaft and it splits everything I have encountered so far.

The only drawback the larger the cylinder it takes more GPM so is slower to fill. I run my B21 at 13-1400 RPM and its quick enough for me to put it in return mode, then get another log in the splitter before it retracts all the way.

So "slow" doesnt overwork me and still get a decent output.

We have a Wallenstein wx310 also and got a 4 way wedge for it last year. It slpits everything with the single wedge and 95% of it with the 4 way. The problem ones are the crotches. The wedge slips right off the single and right back on. Definately worth the $100...
I run the tractor at 12-1300 rpm.
