mwb, great video. That is one awesome machine. It weighs around 113 tons. And it can move mountains.

Not sure if they still do but Cat used to offer tours through this plant. They build everything from the D6 through the D11. Last time I was in that building was spring of 1999 and they where talking about adding another assembly line. At that time I was told the dealer cost for a D11 was around 1.3 milllion.
2 million sure would buy me a lot of compacts! It's amazing how much the are but they sure do a lot of work compared to my CUT. I got about 25 acres I want to clear and in about an hour and 2 million dollars later I could have it gone!!

Where'd you get this info? I'd like to find any proof of this. If you actually watched the video they say the made the engine in Indiana or Illinois also. Please post off facts.

The Caterpillar factory that builds the big crawlers, as well as company headquarters, is in Peoria, Illinois.
Yes, far from everything being made in China.

I live in Peoria area and go into that plant weekly. The guy stating china parts is just an idiot......period. There are china parts, but the majority either by weight or by volume or by number are built right here in the midwest!

Very little can be 100% US made, but we can strive for high content. My 2011 Ford Explorer is 85% US content and the profits go to a US company.

i know a heat treater that does work for them. as far as proof there is none. i no for a fact that cat suppliers in usa buy steel tubing from china its 40% cheaper.

cat is pretty big on their "made in america", even if *some* material/parts in from elsewhere. you made a blanket statement, that is much more untrue than true, and shows you dont know what you are talking about.

Right now Chinese steel is closer to US pricing then you think. Steel from south America is currently less expensive then both. As for the content of the steel used to build this there may be "globally sourced" content from recycling which makes up a large % of what mills produce. This steel is still melted formed and machined in the USA. That's good enough for me

We'll add this. The engines are assembled in Peoria. Patrs are sourced worldwide from the most cost effective suppliers, so that may be domestic or offshore.
Finally the castings are not domestic. All castings are cast offshore, especially large castings like engine blocks.
The units are 'assembled' from parts sourced worldwide, not 'made in the USA'.
Made and assembled are two intrely different animals.
About the only thing 'made' here anymore is babies......:laughing:

The Cat engines are made in Lafayette Indiana and shipped to Peoria.
