Boy, that's a good question on the hood! What a poor design. I recently bought a used STX38 for cheap and did some carb work on it. Now it runs good. I had to do some fabrication on the main mounts on the sides. Reinforced with metal plates epoxied and riveted to it.

I have an STX 38 that is probably ~20 years old.

Garage kept until about the last 10 years... outside un-covered since.

Hood is perfect (albeit a little faded)

I got this STX38 in trade for some help I gave to a tractor-owner. It
looked great, but the carb needed cleaning. It turns out that it was
at the dealer for some kinda service a year earlier, and THEY accidentally
broke the hood. They had to buy him a new one.

The hood looks kinda nekkid with no stickers, however.

The hood is made of the same 1/8" green resin that JD uses on my
4300. If I broke this hood, I would fab a new one out of sheet metal....
