John Deere 950
Hello all. I just bought an '86 JD950 2wd but haven't taken possession yet. I would like to know what manuals/cd's I should get and a good source for them. I plan to do all maintenance and repairs myself and have no reservations about splitting a tractor, though I have never done it. I'm new to this forum stuff, so if someone could tell how to properly word a search to find this info, I won't have to ask so many newbie questions. I'll be offline till tomorrow morning, so thanks in advance for all responses.

The best source for manuals is Ebay. The parts catalog is always available on the John deere web site,for free.

Agree with Barry
Tech manuals available Ebay for just over $100. Doubt there is a CD that covers it.

The 950s manual is no longer available for free on the JD site.

You'll have to order it from JD themselves or somebody else on the net.

JD shows a listing for the CD version, so I'll bet it's also available somewhere.

Part numbers;
Paper owners manual OMR68993

CD owners manual OMR68993CD

Paper tech manual TM1192

CD tech manual TM1192CD

Thanks Willl and all others. I talked someone at a dealer locally and they said my owners manual number was OMRW19870, parts manual was PC216 and technical manual was as you said. Any idea why the numbers are different?

The JD parts catalog is on line at https://jdparts.deere.com and it is free! You can look up any model and see pictures and part numbers,and there is no need to buy a paper catalog.

Might have been a revision to the tractor during the production run.
As an example, the 790 has had three operators manuals available (goes by the tractor's serial number).

Like Roy said, it's a serial number thing and I just took a guess as to which you had.

Here's the run down;

000000 thru 012000
John Deere Ag - New Equipment: Technical Publications - Publications Search

012001 thru 020000
John Deere Ag - New Equipment: Technical Publications - Publications Search

and 020001 and above (which yours must be)
John Deere Ag - New Equipment: Technical Publications - Publications Search

Thanks Willl and Roy. Looks like they have the cd's too.

And if at any time you feel that the 970 was to BIG for your needs, I've got a very nice 790, trade ya straight across. ;)

Well, it's a 950 (maybe you just typoed). Don't even have possession of the dang thang yet and we're already talking trades! That's great actually, because I do plan to downsize when I get done yanking all those trees downed from the hurricane, and I do like to barter. I must not be seeing something, because it looks like a 790 is about the same as a 950, except about twenty years newer. If that was a typo, maybe the 790's were turkeys, and you're trying to take advantage of a newbie here?:D

As far as power, the 950 and 790 are pretty close. The 950 has a bigger engine though (probably more torque). Same transmission...and the 950 weighs about 800 lbs (just the tractor) then the 790.
