Start with an ATV winch.(44 dollars on sale) Throw in 15 dollars worth of spring, bolts, cable parts and electrical goodies and voila!

Not bad for 60 dollars and a few hours work. Sure is going to be better than trying to turn the handle threw the window.

Well Done Mpham,

Is the reason you have a spring return due to the winch being a gravity down winch?

It is power in and out. I tried doing the cable wrap thing and the cables kept getting caught on each other. This way I only needed to use existing holes and the tab already on the chute. No other brackets or fabrication was needed. The spring works better and keeps the cable tight.

I did mine a little different but the end result is the same .Sure beats the hand crank. You have a nice looking set up.

Thanks. Both setups look great. Just goes to prove there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Oh I like it. This may be the best set up to match what I want to do that I have seen so far. Is that a Pronovost blower? Which winch did you buy for $44?? Do you have more/better pictures? I don't quite get how you attached the cable to the chute. So does the spring pul the chute back around or the cable?? If it gets bunged up with slush & ice is the spring going ot get stretched out? Many questions..:D

Looked at it again. So the spring is pulling it counter clockwise when you spool out right? What happens with the spring gets all full of slush & ices up? Have you used this is the real world yet?
Not crapping on your design just don't want to copy it if it hasn't had a real world test season yet. ;)

Haven't got to try it on a storm yet. It is a blizzard b52 blower. The winch goes to an atv and I got it at a discount store on sale. It should be far enough back from the chute to not get full of snow. That is why I put 12 inches of cable between the spring and chute.(time will tell if it works). Both cables hook with a pin on a boss that is already on the chute for there $$$ hydraulic hookup.

Forgot to add. Yes spring pulls counter clockwise. I usually blow to the left all the time so that is why I mounted the spring on that side. If you blow more the other way my blower has the same bolt patterns on each side. Keep asking questions. I will try to get more pics posted this weekend. I hope to never try it out but when snow flys:mad: I will let everyone know how it worked.

I just got done setting mine up last night. I decided against the spring setup. Hopefully yours works out for you. I went to my buddies house to see if he had any flat stock & he just happened to have th eexcat size flat stock, powercoated black with 3/8" holes already punched in it!!

The hardest part was trying to figure out the cable set up like how many wraps on the drum vs. how many wraps on the chute, etc. but it seems to work SLICK!! I just need to make sure I don't drive it too far one way or the other or the winch will rip the thing apart.:(

I don't want to 'snow on your parade' but I have a set up much the same as yours with no spring and often the shute will freeze in place and the winch won't move it. I have a $40.00 winch and the cable is wound around the shute to pull in both directions. Maybe a $400.00 winch would work better? If you store the tractor in a heated building you might not have a problem.

This winch has quite a bit of grunt. It was a normally $90 winch at Napa on sale for $70 plus my company discount. I know I went too far with it once & it started to bend the flat stock I have it mounted on. So it should do it. Well, see.

Same here. Mine has 2000 lbs. of pulling force. That should be enough to rip it right off if I'm not careful.

You should not have any problems. I have the parts to convert my snowblower chute too, but life has gotten in the way this year - unfortunately.

I live in a high snowfall area of central British Columbia, where temperatures are known to go down to -40C. With the hand crank on my snowblower, so far I have had no problems turning the chute - though there will always be a fist time right !

I look forward to having the ATV winch installed on my snowblower as it will certainly make life easier - more so when I finally manage to build me a cab to keep out the elements :D:D:D

Cheers

I just bought a 10AMP auto cycling overload relay today. It is the correct size to fit right in the spot that my in-line fuse it right now. So I'm going ot put that in line & hopefully if I go too far or something jams up it will trip on the overload then come back on in a few seconds.

Nice setups. Using a winch is a good idea. I'm sure that a window motor wouldn't do it on my blower - my chute moves in slots, and occasionally it seems to jam up (while moving it by hand - don't notice when the hydraulics are running) and there is a fairly large amount of force required to get the chute to rotate.

I have a dual hydraulic set-up. My tractor didn't have remotes though, so I kludged a dual-remote setup that is attached to the blower - it plugs into my backhoe PB outlets.

Hmmmm. Yah Jay, your Blower is big so a Winch would be good, but then again, it might rub the Metal to hard with the Winch Wire. Another thing I thought of is how about using a Winch with a Belt? Since the Belt made of Rubber, it won't harm your Chute.

With all the equipments you guys have, i'm sure you guys have old worn Belts laying around that can be used in this simple concept :D
