I'm looking to buy one of these chippers (used, not new) but have no experience with them. Vermeer and Bandit seem to be the most common. Any pointers on what to look out for? It'll be for on-farm use, not commercial site-to-site.

I have the Wallenstein BX42r with the hydro feed, it is a 4 x 10 feed and it has a big brother, the BX62r. It is a 6 1/2 x 12 chipper I have to say, the rectangular feed really helps it swallow awkward branches that square feeds can't. I got it from Iowa Farm Equipment and they shipped it to my house for a very good price. The only problem I has was getting the right hydro fittings to connect to my power beyond, but that is behind me and I now know where the local hydraulic supply shop is.

Here is Wallenstein's website.
Welcome - Wallenstein

I purchased it from these guys.

I've run all vermeer units and really like there larger 12" cap models. I rented there smallest unit this past spring and was pretty dissappointed in it. I was rated to 6" but had trouble with 4" stuff. As for wear items blades come to mind as well as belts. The smaller ones seem to be gas where as the larger are diesels.

Thanks for the replies. Matt, what was your frustration with the 6" Vermeer? I found one that looked in good condition, but the hour meter (almost 7000 !) scared me based on what the owner was looking to get. It's easy enough to rent one around here, so I'll probably try one in the spring. From watching videos on Youtube, I would be annoyed with the 6" if i was chipping stuff near its capacity, but I only want a stand-alone unit that has hydraulic feed to chip stuff under 3", because i've got a pretty good system for rapidly turning 3" and up into small food for the wood stove.
