Starting issues with john deere 2040

Good news and bad news. Bad:theres water in the hydraulic fluid, which we knew about because of the bad pump which will most likely get rebuilt. Good: they got it running by reattatching and replacing most wires and replaced the relay.

Well, you were gonna have to "face the music" with the hydraulic pump anyway's - sooner is probably better. Hopefully, your brake linings won't be shredded, too!

Sweet save on the engine starting! Good to hear it wasn't something major - like a cratered pump and toasted injectors!

Ya its very good, theyll have it at the shop for probably a few weeks. Theyll probably go through it and see whate else will need replaced. My friend who always mowed with it said it smelled pretty bad though. Would you guys recomend a exhaust running out the back (which it already is), or using one of those exhause that goes out the hood? thanks

Personally, I like the upright exhaust that goes through the hood. The exhaust fumes are then expelled above your head where you don't breathe them in. The horizontal running out the back can get fumes in operators area if wind is blowing from the rear and while connecting equipment to hitch.

Alright thats something ill look into then. Its still at Van Wal, im going friday to check it out and talk with the mechanic, and after that, ill decide what to do with the pump.

If you run a tractor very long at a time in the summer time with the underslung muffler your left foot will get hot. At least on my 2040 it would.

I bet, do you smell much if any exhaust now?

Not really but I couldn't leave it idling while hooking up 3pt equipment or it would smoke me out.

I wonder how much that setup would cost? Ill also need to check if mines the model that will let me run it through the hood, because if theres a model that ran the exhaust down by the floorboards, then mine might not be capable of that.

The 2040 shows a change in 1980 at s/n 350,000. In jdparts, both older and newer show horizontal and vertical muffler systems, although different.

To correctly change the types of mufflers on a JD utility 3cyl/4cyl tractors one also needs to change exhaust manifolds.

Just got it back from van wal and it started up no problem!!! Its a sweet tractor, but im not all that familiar with the different levers, as i usually drive a kubota thats a lot newer. All i pretty much know is how to drive it, not activate pto, lower or raise 3 point, or some of what the other levers do though.
