Need some experienced opinions

I am looking to buy a new F150. The dealer is pushing the turbo V6 vs the V8. It does have more oomph and gets 10% better mileage but this is a fairly new engine. . . Does anyone have any experience with this motor & would care to comment?

I drove one there without a trailer and it did pull like a beast

My dad got one in May. He has had Ford trucks most his life but also a few GM's. He is still impressed every day he gets in it. His is a Crew Cab 4x4 FX4 with the twin turbo V6 and 3.73 gears. He has not had it more than 50 miles from home and its averaging 18 mpg. Most of his trips are in the 7 mile range.

He claims its the closest thing to a diesel he has driven.

He is coming over tomorrow to help me work on my barn extension. I will quiz him some more about it.

I think I'll keep my 7.3 for a while longer..

just used my 450 / GN to haul my old dodge ram off to the lot at work so I can sell the thing off. 450 didn't even know there was a trailer back there.. let alone a full size long bed ram truck on it.

I got one in june....F150 crew cab 4x4 3.55 ecoboost. I have about 6000 miles on it, towed my fathers Wellcraft 238 coastal with no problems. I traded a 2008 F250 sc 4x4 6.4L diesel for it, I had enough of the 6.4L engine problems.

I've had an XLT S-Crew 4x4 with the Ecoboost since late August. Tows like a champ. I doubt it gets 10% better gas mileage than the 5.0. It has twin turbos and will burn as much gas as you ask it too. It could burn more gas if it didn't have a 100mph limiter on it. Point is, if you have something big to tow, get it. Ford's been putting too much emphasis on the gas mileage thing. If you go 70mph with your 7 x 14 cargo trailer down the freeway (and yes you can, trust me )you're going to get low mpg. On the other hand, if you aren't towing, keep the speed to 60, you'll get close to 20 mpg on mostly level terrain. There's a big old fat MPG right in the middle of the dash so you can see how you're doing in that regard. Once you learn how to use it, it can be pretty handy. It can also give you fits. Some people don't think it's so accurate, but I do. One thing it keeps track of is how much gas you've used since you reset the trip odometer. I reset it when I fill up. The next time I fill up, the amount that goes into the tank is within 0.1 gallon of what the machine says it used. One down side, if you like to do a lot of work on the engine yourself is access. It totally sucks. Unless your 6'2", you're going to need a box to stand on to check the oil level. The oil filter is in an odd place and horizontal, so most people spill a bunch of oil at least the first time they try to change it. It probably gets better with practice, like most things though. Overall, it's still a great truck to drive. I could have pulled my trailer with the 5.0 just fine, but I do love an engine with torque.

Well I drove my dads today for the first time. I had taken a ride in it but never driven it. Again, his is a Super Crew 4x4 Eco Boost with 3.73 gears. It has the highest GVWR package of 8,200#. Its tow rating according to the manual is 11,300#... The truck is loaded with power sliding rear window, bed liner, back up camera, sync system, leather, center shift, power fold mirrors, sat radio, running boards, rear electronic diff locker, ect.

Its the first truck I have driven since the Nissan Titan that I like better.

We went to lunch, me 165#, dad, 210#, and my uncle 250#. I drove and was not easy on it. On a 13.5 mile round trip it averaged 18.3 mpg. I saw 26 mpg with the cruise set at 60 mph on a 55 mph road. The mileage breaks up like this. 2.25 miles of country roads with 3 stop signs, 9 miles of 55 mph roads with 3 stop lights each way for a total of possible 6 stops. To be honest I am not sure if we hit them all or not. I do remember stopping at 2 and both times I was on it till about 70 mph. Then 2.25 miles of country roads with 2 stop signs.

My dad says the mpg thing is dead on. He has checked it on every gallon put in and its not off more than .2 mpg. It has 4,400 miles on it as of today since May, and like I said, its not been farther than 50 miles from home and no Freeway miles, just State Highway and country roads.

By the way, it will run. It was to 70 in noting flat and rides awesome.

After thinking about & speaking with my son (he recently purchased a big Chevy dually with a diesel to tow his racecar/trailer) I just could not get by the sticker shock. Almost $50K msrp for really nice dressed out F150, omg.

I only need it really for dump runs & moving the tractor 15 miles a few times a year. I'm going to wait until the company I work for cycles out another F350. They are all diesels, 4wd with 12 foot flat beds & liftgates. I'll make do.

To make myself feel better I bought a Subaru STI today :thumbsup:

If Ford would give me anything for my old Superduty I'd be sitting in an ecoboost too. They are way under the sticker, just like chevy and dodge.

Personally, I don't think the Ecoboost is worth it. The V8 5.0l has comparable power and fuel mileage even when towing yet is cheaper to buy up front, MUCH less stuff to go wrong, easier/cheaper to maintain and repair, and felt just as fun in the short test drives I had in both trucks. If I had to choose a new F150, it would be the 5.0l but that wouldn't be for at least a few years to prove it's reliability since all these engines are still pretty new...

He bought one in May, his words are it is OK but if he had it to do over he would have just got the 5.0, his words not mine.

I have never driven an Eco-Boost but I'll stick with my high horespower V8's until I am forced to change.

I'm all GM but I do give Ford credit for investing the R&D into this effort.

I bought a loaded Ford Flex Limited with the EcoBoost in July and I LOVE it. we have over 6500 miles on it already, the mileage has been steadily climbing. we live well out of town so all out miles are partial hwy, partial backroads, and partial city. I'd bet they are 40% 30% 30% in that order. We are consistently over 19 mpg, even when I merge quickly on the fwy. When I run up to the beltway for work, I'm getting in the 22's average. I do not reset the MPG meter except every 3rd tank or so (over 1,000 miles typically).

It has TONS of power. I love it.

But I've decided that when I replace my 4-door 2001 F-150 2wd, I'm going to look for a used F-350 4x4, 4-door big diesel with single rear wheel...

But I LOVE the new F-150's, and I would take the EcoBoost if I bought one (Unless it was a Raptor)...

I should have Ford and Harley tattooed on me somewhere though...
