Yep, the problem was definitely the oil. If you want to have a real popcorn experience, coconut oil is the place to start. Corn oil will work in a pinch, but it doesn't have the real flavor.

Corn oil does not have the right flavor for popcorn?? Now that is weird!

ps I cannot believe I just read & then posted in a popcorn thread. I don't even know myself anymore.

I think it has something to do with the word "Dumb" its one of them things that draw us into it, and then we cannot reframe ourself from commenting ;) therefor I think we been reversed dumbfounded:D

It doesn't. Corn oil tastes like corn. That's why it doesn't add any flavor to popcorn. I.e. the popcorn already tastes like corn. Adding corn oil that tastes like corn won't make the popcorn that tastes like corn taste any more like corn than it already does. Adding coconut oil, butter, or just about anything else will add flavor precisely because it doesn't taste like corn.

hehe... good one. Adding dog food to it wont taste like corn either LOL. but im only joking. The wife actually got a book about different flavored popcorns, and she plans on trying some this winter.

I might just try coconut oil next time..see how i like it

The best popcorn I remember making was in a black skillet on a gas stove with plenty of shaking to keep it popping. Now my wife wanted a modern electric glass top stove and we can't shake a skillet on it.

Our microwave popcorn, regardless of brand, always is more chewy and less crisp than our old popcorn was. :(

I guess I need to get out my propane camp stove for my next batch.

Popcorn rocks. :D

the local movie theater was refilling their bulk maker the other day and I looked at their bottle of oil. it was mostly: cottonseed oil, palm kernal oil, and coconut oil, as listed in that order, top to bottom, ( salt, and some other fake butter flavor and a stabilizer..e tc.. ) thus.. some pretty good stuff ( YIKES! )

When you need to shake the pan, just lift it up a bit. Now if that is a cast iron skillet that could be a good work out. We have had two glass top stoves, one in the old house and one in the new. I still make my popcorn in a pan on the stove top.

The kids like Jiffy microwave popcorn. I prefer the stuff I make on the stove top but the Jiffy ain't bad. :licking:

Later,

Yikes is right, it tastes great and it is very fattening{coconut oil, Palm oil}. We have the Nice kettle popper in break room..like old theatre type. we switched from corn oil to the theatre mix, as described above. That good tastingstuff will not come off the popper kettle or insides of the glass. Now you tell me, WHAT does it BIND to inside of your body? Don't you just love it?

it is funny to me why particular oils are recommended for cooking certain things,
for instance it is recommended for me to use peanut oil when cooking in my outdoor deep fryer, Fish,Turkey,etc,etc,...... then we have the olive oils that my wifes adds to almost everything, and now we have all these oils for cooking popcorn,:D and I never even knew coconut had oil, Milk yes! oil no:cool: I suppose one would have to live where they're a bunch of nuts to know about these type of things,:D

Oh! and Soundguy How do you Know which oil is bad? I know I don't eat Bacon or that fatback stuff, or even them pork skin things, I was told the fat from all that goes straight to the heart,

peanut oil has a higher smoke/flash point than olive oil.

On that subject about hearts and oils. my family has a history of bad hearts, So the Dr said take daily Salmon fish oil, omega 3 oil and or flaxseed oils, ya think that oil is good for the ole tickers and arteries..Maybe it cuts the cocoanut oil down??Yeah..

All those oils - Palm , coconut and cottonseed are really bad for us...also watch out on labels for products in the grocery store for anything that contains Gum...like Guar gum...it is impossible to lose weight if eating anything with guar gum in it...The Atkins diet points this out and I have found it to be true. Those Egg beater products have guar gum in them and I actually will gain a little after eating those eggs even though the calories are under 100...

We use Smart Balance butter and spray and olive oil ..that is it .

I've identified a major source of frustration to consumers and food producers alike when it comes to the ever changing trends and fads of what is "Healthy". It's different for everyone. What is healthy for me is not necessarily healthy for you. Genetics, lifestyle, gender, body composition, health history, and body image all make a difference in what's "Healthy" for you and what's not.

Therefore I take any healthy designation with a large amount of skepticism. And, I eat butter on my popcorn.
