John Deere 2240 MFWD
I just bought my first tractor. It's a John Deere 2240. I hooked a 8ft black blade on it and raised it up to go and grade the driveway. When I lower the control lever it take about five minutes for the 3 point to lower. Anybody have any suggestions besides ordering an operators manual?

Ordering a manual is is good idea...but in the mean time-there is a ROD (rate-of-drop) valve under the seat that control's how fast the 3PH drops depending on the wieght of the implement.

OK, found a bolt with a plate attached to it under the seat. truning it lowered the 3ph and tightening it raises the 3ph. Doesn't seem to matter what I do with the two levers on the side.

Are you referring to the load and depth control? Look for letters L and D usually there are about 3 or 4 positions you can choose from.

There is another transmission fill cap with a small piece of steel centered on the tractor too.

Neither of these is what KennyD is referring to though. Look for a round knob.

I don't know... I haven't found anything but the bolt with the plate under the seat. There's a filler cap behind the seat. And there are two levers on the right hand side. A large one attached to a fan shaped plate and a small one with 4 or 5 detents tight to the transmission. It doesn't seem to matter what I do with those two levers - when you start the tractor, the 3PH rises and when you shut off the tractor, the 3PH goes down. If I loosen the bolt I found under the seat, the 3PH will go down while the tractor is running and if I retighten it the 3PH raises. Doesn't seem to matter what I do with the levers on the side.

I planned to do that this morning when I went to feed the cows, but forgot my camera. I'll try to remember tomorrow. The more I look at it and think about it, I'm beginning to think that I may have a broken or disconnected linkage inside. I ordered a manual, but it won't be here until sometime next week. Right now I'm just trying to figure out which control is supose to do what and I think I figured that out???

I believe the larger lever should control the up/down on the 3PH and doesn't. I think the smaller lever with the detents tight to the 3PH housing is like a depth control or something. I'm pretty sure the bolt under the seat is the control mentioned earlier for controlling the drop pressure. I'll try to get pix out tomorrow.

dcyrilc,
I did spend some time last night out of curiosity looking at the parts diagrams for your 2240, it is like most older Deeres. Can't be positive but it appears to me that the screw under the seat with the small rectangular tab should be the ROD adjustment. For starters I would set the load and depth control lever in the middle position. The larger lever attached to the quadrant with slider is your rockshaft raise and lower control.

You should sign up on the JD parts website to gain access to the exploded view parts diagrams, only takes a minute or two and can help you tremendously.

Thanx Steve.

I've already regestered. Did that a week before I got the tractor home. I printed out all the sheets for the tractor and impliments, and put them in a 3 ring binder in sheet protectors so that I would have them available anytime I need them.

I have the camera on the table with my keys so I won't forget it this morning when I head to the ranch to feed cows.

Cyril

Did anyone ever figure this out. My 2240 started doing the same thing. Start the engine 3 pt goes up, shut engine off 3 pt goes down, takes forever to lower any attachment I put on.
Thanks
Ben

Yup, control right in front of the seat is the Rate of Decent valve...if you want to call it that. To the right of the seat is the draft control, and this should be in the top hole...all the way up do defeat the draft control. Far right control is the up/down for the 3pt. I had to go all the way thru my 3pt at about 5000 hours replacing valves/seats/and springs. Not a big job.... Mine was doing the automatic up/down pulsing thing. But I bet you are in for a run to the JD dealer for some little expensive parts...... Everything is in the top casting that the seat bolts to. If your bottom 3pt seals are leaking where the shaft for your two 3pt drag arms go into the main casting....this is a great time to deal with them, too. Since you will be dumping all the fluids. Me, I forgot...and mine still leaks some....... Good luck, ,Jerry... :)

Sorry for not updating this thread. I ended up doing a rebuild on the 3PT. Here's the thread on it. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/hydraulics/174760-jd-2240-rebuilding-my-3-a.html The gist of what I was experiancing was that my lift valve was leaking and putting pressure to the cyclinder.

The rebuild was pretty straight forward and simple. IIRC, the parts weren't that expensive either. Under $200 I think.

Keep us posted on what you find and how you address it. You're welcome to use this thread for it if you wish.... or post us a link to follow.

Thanks! I will be back at our TN location Monday. Will take a look at the adjustments, hope thats all it is. This is my Fathers old tractor and has not one marking. He has lost the manual and very likely messed with the controls. Unlike our tractors in Florida and our Case in TN this unit does not have the little turtles and rabbits on it :confused2:
We will post our results.
Thanks again

Nice write up/pictures on the repair Cyril... I am impressed. You have been pretty busy since you got that tractor a few years ago. Time for another..???? :)

Thanks for the compliment. As for another tractor, I've still got lots I can play with on this one.;)
