I have a hyd pump that splines on pto shaft, which is max at 540 rpm, so my question, can I gear a small engine down with sprockets and roller chain to run it ? The engine is 11hp. would not this also up the applied power of the engine? Next question. I want to use a hyd cyl to raise and lower a hyd chainsaw without causing undue heartache.Am wondering if I can use a pressure regulator to apply small but steady pressure to feed the saw thru the wood? All ideas, thoughts and facts are welcome. I would think about a 3 to 1 gear reduction on the pump would be in the ballpark.

You can gear the engine down for the PTO pump, but there are better ways. The PTO pump has a lot of value as a PTO pump. You can probably sell it for quite a bit and then get a smaller pump for a lot cheaper that would be a good fit for the engine. Getting a new pump may actually be cheaper than buying the gears or pulleys and belts you'd need to gear it down.

What kind of flow do you figure you need?
What's the RPM of your engine?

With these answers you can size your pump properly. This one from Surplus Center might be a good fit and it's only $80.

Those PTO pump that fit on the PTO shaft by Prince, take between 18 and 32 HP to run them. It would be difficult to connect a small engine to one of these pumps. This small pump would do what you want. To control of the speed of the cyl, install a hyd needle valve. Adjust the relief valve to set pressure.

This is a 3 GPM, and is reversible. You can also mount it at least three different ways.

Thanks for the replies, Here is some more info. Pump is a 1950's era Von Ruden pto pump, 30gpm, 12 brake hp it runs a hyd chainsaw. I am hoping to run everything on the processor with it. I am thinking by gearing it down that will increase the engine hp. I already have the sprockets and chain. The sprockets are 10 teeth and 32 teeth. The saw is 27" 404 chain.

i agree.. find a stinger pump instead that may be already suited for the engine speed.. less hp needed too

How large is the hyd motor on the chainsaw? That is a lot of GPM to run a chainsaw.

A lot of processors have 2 to 4 hyd motors.

...I am thinking by gearing it down that will increase the engine hp.

Just to clarify, this won't change the hp of your engine. If anything you will lose horsepower due to the losses inherent in the gear or pulley system. It could, however, increase the torque.

In the end your horsepower output is a factor of your pressure and your flow. If you get that with a smaller pump at a higher speed you have the same horsepower as if you get it from a larger pump geared down to a lower speed.

Down to practical stuff... Do you have something already for the gears or pulleys?

30gpm is correct, 12 brake HP, I have owners manual. I know it don't actually increase engine hp. I'm not sure what I was trying to say. I do have the sprockets to gear it down. 10 teeth on small one and 32 on large one. 11hp gas engine or I could go with a 20 hp 2 cyl diesel. I am trying to use what I have if possible. Right now it will run the saw, log clamp, log advance and splitter which is 5X24, 2 1/4 shaft. No two should operate at the same time. Later I plan to add a log deck and conveyer. Right now it has a 16gpm 2 stage pump and it is real slow. Thanks again for the info.

30 GPM at 2000 psi requires about 31 HP, so unless you have a large gas or diesel motor, you can use the pump, but will not be able to achieve the pumps full potential.

If you gear things down, you simply reduce the rpm, and increase torque.

The hyd pump is going to take so much HP to run the processor at full potential. The pump will provide enough fluid for the hyd motor, and some HP is lost there. If you decrease the load, you could reduce the volume of the pump by reducing the rpm, saving fuel and some wear and tear.

Hyd volume dictates the speed of a hyd motor, and speed of cyl movement. You will only have pressure when the cyl are providing resistance, or the hyd motor is doing work.

Work out the GPM required for all components operating at the same time, or if you time out the operation, you could minimize the volume required.

The reason that more than one pump is used, is that the more levers you activate, using one pump, the speed for everything will slow down, and if say, the hyd motor, is getting all the volume, there is less for other components. Hyd motors require a certain volume, and cyl use the fluid briefly. You could install flow dividers, so one leg of the system will always have a certain volume.

If you already have the sprockets, then gearing it down would be the cheapest method for you. What are the speeds of your two different engines? I'm guessing that your diesel engine runs at a slower speed than your gas engine. Unless I had another pressing need for that diesel engine, I'd use it.
