I have a rear PTO issue with my B2630. When I engage my rear PTO at idle a very loud noise comes from the PTO. I do not have anything attached. It has never made this noise before. The noise is like an engine knocking or gears chattering. It does not always do it. I was messing around with and at one point the noise went away. When I disengaged and reengaged the PTO, the noise came back. The noise does not go away when I increase the rpms. It just changes pitch. I only have 75 hours on it. I have done brushing hogging and mowing.

What could cause this? Is there any adjustments to the PTO I may need to do?

That does not sound good at all. If the tractor is still under warranty you should call the dealer ASAP?

I thought I updated my post? I messed up somewhere. Anyway, I called my dealer and spoke with the service depart. He said bring it in and they will take a look see. So Monday I will bring it in. I'll post back afterwards.

There is no linkage to tighten or adjust to fully engage the PTO. The noise is worst after the hydro oil heats up to normal operating temperature. I dropped it off this morning. The mechanic thinks the noise is gear chatter from the PTO not fully engaging. I will have to wait and see. The only good thing about it is the mechanic didn't think much of it. He said he would pull the PTO and if need be just replace the entire unit.

Well it does not look good. The service tech called me and tried to say the noise is normal. It din't make the noise when I bought it and has not until now. He will be speaking with his manager and the manger is going to call me back. He said the PTO does not make the noise when under a load. I have ran it several time without a load before and it never made the noise. I will be testing it out when I pick it up.

Any of you B3030 or B2630 owners, does your PTO make a loud chattering or hitting noise when the rear PTO is engaged at idle without any implement attached?

Servicer manger just called. Basically Kubota is holding to the clatter is normal and will not pay (I am assuming) for the dealer to open the rear of the PTO. Since I have a year of warranty left, they just want me to continue to use it as is. I am not happy. I researched and purchased a Kubota for their reputation and quality. I have been extremely happy with my tractor until now.

See if he has a unit on the lot and try it out with him there. If it makes no noise then ask him why yours does and his doesn't

I tried that. They don't have any. I will be going by a few other dealer lots just to see this weekend.

With no load on it my makes a little noise as do most tractors as they are make to have a load and work that way other wise you hear at idle the gears load and unload rapidly which would be the noise. If I undestood your post it don't do it with a load? So why would you turn it on with nothing hooked to it?

Running my B3030 rear PTO at idle with nothing attached creates just a slight ticking or tapping type sound as the shaft spins. Nothing loud at all.

I just cleaned it up and was getting ready to put it away. More or less just messing around with it. If it was just gears make a slight chattering noise I would say no problem. However that is not it and maybe I am not giving the best description of the noise. It sounds like the rear end is being hit with a ball pein hammer or like when a car lifter gos out. The noise is louder than the engine and can hear through the entire range from idle to full throttle. It never did this before so why now, wear? I have not reconnected my mower to teat it, but I plan to do it after i get it back.

Thanks. That was how mine sounded up to now. How many hours do you have on yours?

Correction - 140 hours. I have never used the rear PTO for anything yet but the person I bought it from did. I figure a rough cut mower will be my first rear PTO implement.

Thanks for the info. I really think a bearing has failed and it nothing really serous. I am borrowing work's bore scope to look at PTO gear from the oil fill hole. I don't know if I will be able to see anything.

Not sure how relevant this is, but see the following thread for PTO noise I experienced on my brand new L3700:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/kubota-owning-operating/181029-l3700-power-take-off-noise.html

I called multiple dealerships and was told that "they all do that" . The explanations in the thread also make a lot of sense. I recently purchased a Land Pride finish mower (which has a lot more rotational friction than the land pride rotary mower) and even at idle with the PTO engaged it does not chatter/rattle at all.

Thanks Steven. The noise comes when nothing is attached. I just need to get my tractor back and start testing it. If it goes away with the an attachment connected, I guess I will just have to wait and see.

I don't know if the mechanicals are the same, but my 2010 L 3400 HST had a "knock when PTO was engaged with no implement on last fall. Dealer said it was not unusual for this and to run it. I have a 72" rear mount blower I us all winter and blow 3-5 times a week with depths 4 to 12 inches each time. I blew snow all winter and the unit does not make a noise when attached to an implement. I worked all winter hard with no problem, but still knocks with no implement. I for one will keep running it. It's on record at the dealer.

firemech,

Thanks for the info. That sounds like what mine is doing and the dealer told me the same thing. He is giving me a work order as receipt. I plan on cutting this weekend so I will see. I'll go along with what they say and keep and ear on the noise.

This sounds like your over run clutch is clicking in and out because there is no load on the pto shaft. Try hooking up to a mower or something with some cintrifigul force, engae pto and run up to speed then shut pto off, you will probably here the same noise. this would be normal. Clicking noise while running the mower would be grounds for concern.
