2011 Silverado/Sierra

   / 2011 Silverado/Sierra #101
I went through at least a dozen Ford 4R100 transmissions from 1990-2004. E4OD's were even worse. Even my Fords not used to plow snow ate through them. Opened up on a bench, I was amazed to see how cheaply they were built inside. Local tranny shop owner used to joke with me "if it weren't for Ford, I wouldn't be in business". I always noticed he drove a GM truck, but what would he know......Ford sells more trucks, so they must be better.

Definately get the Ford tattoo.

 As Dmace said, if someone went through that many transmissions, it's operator error or failure to perform proper maintenance. Besides, I can think of....one... person on the internet who would keep something that went "through at least a dozen" transmissions.

Maybe you didn't bother to read all of my last post in which it states that the tranny shop I took it to said if it weren't for Ford, he couldn't stay in the transmission repairing business.

And if I were rough on transmissions or didn't perform proper maintenance as you insinuate, I'd have replaced my Allison trans by now.:rolleyes:

The 4R100 didn't come out until 1999 in the Super Duty's. Although it and the E4OD are VERY closely related.

I don't know how someone could say that transmission is cheaply built. The design is pretty stout. It is all clutch apply for upshifts and only uses a band for engine braking and IIRC reverse. The biggest problems with them were the converter in early models and the fact that when they started to wear hard parts(as all transmissions do) the debris usually got stuck in the valvebody which would invariably end up causing failure in the hydraulics.

He pointed out the shortcomings to me. We went through TC's like crazy. Sometimes we'd get lucky and the TC would get noisy (sound of ball bearings in a can) and we'd run it to the shop and get an aftermarket converter with some heavier fins brazed on it. Then it would hold, but the stock TC was a joke behind a diesel engine. One of my masons has a '97 stroke with a E4OD and he's on his 3rd one in 137K miles and no snowplowing, just tows a mortar mixer.

It amazes me what you guys know about trucks, this was a good read. Good luck with the Ford Brian, you can count on the tatoo lasting longer than it's trans.
My Dmax is working like new at almost 140K, hope it stays that way cuz I sure can't afford another one.

Well, I officially came to the dark side. I am now the owner of a Ford. I can't wait to get my gooseneck hitch in this thing, and see what it will do.

Brian

I think you made a wise choice. You will soon realize why Ford sells so many trucks.

Around here Dodge keeps the tranny shops open. Fords tow them in.:D

Yep, some guys just do not know how to operate equipment.

Yeah Ford sells so many because people have to keep replacing them as they die! It took 3 dead Ford's for me to finally get a reliable truck.
And I would rather have a truck keeping the tranny shops open than one keeping the diesel engine shops open. $1600 for a tranny rebuild, $6,000 to replace the head gaskets on a Powerstroke.

Wow, I want to sell you mechanical work! Six grand for head gaskets?!  I kept my Dodge for 10 years and loved it, but it DID cost me over $6000 to get a quality ATS transmission to be reliable. The $1500 to $2000 quick fixes on Dodge transmissions might get you a year before the torque monster eats them.

Don't worry Brian, you ought to have a great truck. As you probably know, there really isn't that much difference in the trucks. I've owned several of each. I simply won't consider another new GM because of the billions GM screwed stockholders out of. I laugh each time I look up "the new GM" stock and see it still dropping from it's IPO. If you got toasted by them once, I don't see why people ran out and bought it again...only to see it dropping again.

Brian -

Congrats on the truck, looks great! Let us know how it performs for you.

I'd rather buy a truck that tows a heavy trailer up a hill and comes in first and goes down the other side and comes in first in braking power than a truck that comes first in sales numbers or stock value.

You'll like the 450 Brian. I had one for ~4 years too and I can remember being very excited when I bought it.

Congratulations on the truck Brian. You bought what you wanted, plain and simple.

It was more of a compromise. I really wanted the 2011 Duramax/Allison but it was going to be another $15K+ and I was going to have to wait anywhere from weeks to months to get one. Having essentially been without a truck since the beginning of November and borrowing a friends truck when I needed to move my trailer, finding a truck that would do the job and it being on the lot was a big deciding factor too. I'm getting ready to go into my busy season, waiting as much as 2 months would have really cut into my business for this year.

I feel like I rolled the dice a little with the 6.4, but considering it got 41K miles put on it in 3 years it wasn't a driveway queen. The person that leased it before I bought it, used it quite a bit. So I think that works to my favor considering it had a clean report. We all know stuff breaks, so even if I bought the new GM product, there would be no guarantee that it would not end up in the shop for repairs.

Happy for you Brian...You have a truck for the business, that's what matters...Hope you have great luck with it...This is from A GM guy...Sometimes circumstances dictate the outcome and it sounds like everything worked out for you.

That's another great advantage GM has: 5yr/100K powertrain warranty. They really put it all on the line for the customer.

Big deal. Ford and Dodge have similar warranties. Ford is 5/100,000. If you want the best warranty you better run out and buy you a Hyundai, they now have 20year 200,000 mile warranties.

Its all done to sell vehicles, plain and simple. GM could not give away a Dmax early on when the Ford 7.3 and the Dodge 5.9 ruled the roost. GM had to do something to bring in customers, you can only sell so cheap. The best way was with warranties, it wins customer base. Look at Hyundai and its 400% market share increase.

Again, congratulations Brian. Keep us updated on the truck. Maybe start a new thread labeled 2008 F-450 6.4L so others considering one can learn from you. I believe you will give a fair assessment of the truck, you just seem like that type of man.

Whats the plan for the 8.1L GM you now have sitting around. Maybe a 5.9L Cummins?

I'll post some more pics later this week after I get the hitch put in it. I'll also have a review on how it is to tow with. My buddies truck that I have been using is a F350 4x4 King Ranch with a 6.0 and it seems to do well, so I expect this truck do better than it. The hitch is supposed to be here Wednesday, hopefully I will get it put in that day. I still have to get the vinyl signs made for it too.
