Finally got around to transplanting some trees. I have a bunch more to do but it was getting a little muddy. I dug out the trees with a shovel first then used the FEL to lift them up and place a tarp around the root ball for transporting it.

nice job I was thinking about doing this also, I have some small ash trees I want to move. How did you attach them to the bucket to lift them out?

Do you folks have the ash borer in your end of the country. They have made their way to Minnesota. Cities are cutting older ones down to prevent the spread. Life may be limited.... just like elms out here. Beware of counting on them in the long haul. But you may be lucky.....

I just used a strap so i just tied it around the tube that runs between the arms of the FEL. I then made a wooden platform to lift up the rootball so i didnt hurt the trunk. I really need to weld on some hooks.....

Yeah there is issue with the ash beetle here. I haven't personally cam across any infected trees. But there is reason to be worried.

No we don't have them yet. Maybe I will move them inside to protect them. they are always testing for them and they put restrictions on firewood transporting over 50 miles.

My understanding is that state parks here in Indiana have prohibited people from bringing in their own firewood for campfires due to the beetle issue. They now require you to purchase firewood from them if you want a campfire. I don't know if it's a problem here but they are taking measures to prevent the spread.

I'm afraid the long term outlook for ash trees is very poor due to the emerald ash borer. I live in Pennsylvania and the EAB has been identified in at least a dozen counties in the western part of the state. This summer the state forestry department lifted the quarantine on ash firewood as it proved to be ineffective in slowing down the spread of EAB.

I dig a new hole with the backhoe, scoop the tree up in the backhoe then transport it to the new location, place it in the new hole with the backhoe and fill around it by hand. Has worked well so far.

I was going to try the BH for that but i thought it wouldnt be able to support enough of the root ball. If i had a wire cage or something it would work. I had to transport it about 2000' with some bumby areas.
