No strength on PTO please advise

On my JD 770 my PTO seems to engauge fine , but when I lower my finish mower into grass it slows down to a stop like I have the clutch pushed. It seems to have done this all at once when my nephew borowwed my mower, does this sound like the clutch. and is it a hard fix. I can't find anything showing the clutch or PTO breakdown. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TBN. I'd start by asking YOUR NEPHEW

Sounds like the pto clutch is fried. There may be some adjustment room left. Do you have the owners manual?

if its the clutch, and it hasnt been adjusted before, you can usually adjust it to get more use. my dealer did this for my older JD, its a minor adjustment, and worked great

Do you have the power train double-clutch (two stage) to allow operation of the PTO continuously?

And, to be sure we know what "slows down" means, does it appear to be within the tractor or at the finish mower?

It is definitely the PTO shaft slowing down and I do have the two stage clutch but I don't have any of the manuals

unfortunately, on many 2 stage clutches, pedal freeplay is about all you can adjust.

Any signs of oil dripping out of the clutch area? It would be an indication of a crank seal leaking and maybe getting on the clutch.

If interested in tackling the problem yourself, I'd urge you to get the CD tech manual. Not that expensive and very informative on the R&R repair with good illustrations.
Here is a pic showing the dual clutch. Appears there are special tools needed to keep the package together when removing, and for sure, when installing.

Is it possible your PTO shaft has a shear pin or shear bolt? The nephew may have let the clutch up too fast engaging the PTO at full speed and sheared a pin / bolt.
Try engaging the PTO, let the clutch up while someone watches the tractor end of the PTO drive shaft to see if that end is turning. If the finish mower is raised with no load against it (such as grass) the mower will probably turn but stop or almost stop when lowered into grass.

beenthere mentioned the cd tech manual... not me.

I can only guess that he meant the jd manual for the machine in cd format, vs paper format.

Last manual I ordered from JD was a print on demand. I could get paper or cd.. I personally chose paper.. even though it cost more... your call on which manual you get.. both work out fine and you can print the manual off the cd if you want to get one bound.. etc.

having a service manual is key to keeping a machine alive.. unless you plan onthe dealer fixing everything.. etc..
