i wish i could get some 1500lb bales of alfalfa where im at for $150 i could make a good living just turning them into little bales and selling to the horse lovers in my area they give up to 100 dollars for some bermunda grass round bales and 8 to 9 dollars for good squares so i could get around 15 dollars a little bale and there will be around 30 bales when made into little bales

Gosh. I paid $1.85 for small bales, out of the field, last summer. Alfalfa goes for $1-$1.50 more. When we had the drought several years ago, I paid $4 for grass hay. Round bales were just not available. Prior to that I had paid $10 for a round bale out of the field.

Normally I don't start feeding until mid December and quit in mid March. We are down to 9 horses now. We had 23 at the peak when we were breeding.

If you have your own land we can get it baled and dropped in the field for $.75 per bale by a local farmer. Last time I did this was with 8 acres in 2009 so the price may have changed a little plus he passed away and his son took over.. Have had no need for it but we sold 100 bales, keep 100 bales, and traded the rest to a plumber for work. We had to deliver.

I looked into having a custom baler come in a couple years ago and he wanted $1/bale for squares and I think $10 or $15 for rounds. The problem is you end up depending on someone else specifically to get your hay cut etc. It took 3 years for me to get someone to actually follow through and bale my fields.
Hopefully it will get cut this year as well. He needs the hay and I need it cut and now that I've bought a boat load of animals I need more hay... good times :)

Wow and I thought I was paying a lot for hay. I feed my cows pretty high quality second cut alfaalfa/grass mix - 4x5 rounds of 750-800lbs each. The first batch of this year cost $55 a bale.

Just had a delivery recently of a full truckload 42 bales for $45 each a bale. I thought that was a good deal around here but had to take the full load. Will have some left over to feed in the fall.

The hay is very much horse quality. I find that when folks around here advertise cow hay it is really really crappy. All my animals get is grass and hay and no grain so I try to get as good quality as I can.

In our area it was running $1.00 to $1.25 depending how well it yields and size of field. Round bales were running $8 to $10 a bale. It didn't seem to make any difference on wrapped or twine. Twine is less expensive but wrap is faster.

wow.. alfalfa rounds for 55$ for a 7-800# bale.

I'd be a millionair here in florida if I had them to sell for that...

Two string alfalfa (40-50 pound) bales are ~ $10-11 at the feed store. You'd probably have enough there to buy a round of drinks for the forum:)

Wow! That would be $4.00 to $5.00 tops in my area. Wish I had a couple of semi loads!:D I could buy a round for the forum.
The hay in the pic was 2008 Grand Champion at the local fair and was the top alfalfa tested for RFV (relative feed value) at Forage Day sponsored by Purdue.
It is tough to make hay that nice in Indiana consistently. I am going to chearish that one.
