This all reminds me of an old tired carpenter joke that, nonetheless, still makes me laugh. When I was working as a carpenter's helper while in high school, we were driving 4" spikes with small sledgehammer. The carpenter asked if I always hit where I looked. When I said yes, he said, "Well, don't look at my finger!" I know it is stupid, but it still brings a smile to my face.:laughing:

Jim, I guess you know that's not only a good joke, but there's a great deal of truth and logic to it. When driving, you are more likely to hit something in the road if you're looking right at it. Motorcyclists especially learn to not look directly at a pothole or debris in the roadway. Instead, look at the road where you want your wheels to go. You can see something, know you do not want to hit it, and yet you are likely to hit it, if you keep looking at it. The same applies to car drivers, but it's not as critical a problem on 4 wheels.

I know what you mean and it's true but whether the Army , Marines or any branch one bad apple can't ever spoil the whole bunch...Marines are OK with me and I have always felt the Coast Guard did not get near the respect they deserve...any of you Coast Guard Members out there...

My Dad is retired Coast Guard. 4 yrs Navy and 16 Coast Guard. Was on Ice breaker and got to go places few others do. Very proud of him and any military personel

Another group of our Military that gets little to no respect or benefits are those who served in the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard Reserves during the Viet Nam years...it is a shame..These folks were under constant threat of being activated and sent to Viet Nam ..it had to be a life altering experience, never knowing if you would be called yet they are never recognized and even small benefits are witheld form these folks on the state and local levels..

2*It had to be a life altering experience, never knowing if you would be called.

1*I know the feeling well Spent 6 long years living under that threat.
2*It was tough emotionally , especally being young and having to go away so soon after meating the first and only true love of my life .
Not Only did I have to live under the shadow of being called to Nam but there were all the race riots and prison riots to deal with also.
Many a time I said to my wife of 46 years. I think it might be easer on my mind if they called me up cause at least I would not have to worry about that any longer.
The first six months were the lonlest months of my life and the next 5.5 years was a tough act to maintain the role of 1*new husband 2*Wage earner 3*a military member.

Like I've said to my wife many a time.
I wouldn't take a million dollars for the experence but i wouldn't do it again for a million dollars.

1* You forgot to include this one in your list , an oversight on yout part I'm sure.
National Guard .
I served 6 years with them 1963 = 1969.
right during the hart of the Viet Nam period.

No doubt! And a resounding YES LBrown59, National Guard as well! For all you Nam Vets.......My service was primarily during peace time. I can not begin to imagine what you went through in defending your land, your country....and then to return home only to go through what so many of you endured from a stiff-necked people lacking the intelligence to understand what you did for them.

I'm certain many here at TBN will agree that you are deserving of our complete and most sincere gratitude.

I just want to add to what brin and LBrown59 and others here have so rightly acknowledged.

A special thanks to all you Viet Nam era Vets.

The great women who faithfully stood by their hero's and in many ways helped our military men focus on the great task before them.

No doubt! And a resounding YES LBrown59, National Guard as well! For all you Nam Vets.......My service was primarily during peace time. I can not begin to imagine what you went through in defending your land, your country....and then to return home only to go through what so many of you endured from a stiff-necked people lacking the intelligence to understand what you did for them.

I was in the USCG from 1965-1969. I agree and paraphrasing Rodney Dangerfield, "We get no respect."

IIRC, there's at least one other member who was (or is) in the the Coast Guard.

I retired from the USCG in 2006.....went in in 1990....after 5 years in the Army....and 4 years in the Marines before that.....I went for the variety pack!
Sure had some interesting "experiences" along the way....

The Coast guard always had the smallest budget/recognition/voice of any military service. They became a bit more recognized after 9/11 and becoming part of the Homeland Security.
