Do I need a CDL?

Is this for business or personal use, it could make a difference.
Did we ever get an answer about pulling the Bobcat for Business or Personal use??? Not many people move a Bobcat for just Personal Use and the laws may differ some if the Bobcat is moved for Hire/Commercial Use... Insurance may also be an issue???

I've always heard that also but.........that isn't what a company certified vehicle alterer/modifier for LDT/MDT upfitter for utility bodies company told me. I asked him what it would take to uprate a '05 2500 Dodge/Cummins 9000 GVWR to a 3500 SRW 10100 GVWR. He said NHTSA rules won't allow raising the trucks GVWR but he can lower GVWR. My question to him was if I add all of the upgrades that Dodge uses on the 3500 SRW truck could he issue a higher GVWR.
This from NHTSA:

I can not believe the GVWR of a Cummins 2500 is only 9,000#. My F-250 PS is 10,000#. Same with the 3500SRW at 10,100# My F-350 SRW is 11,500#

That is a big difference. What year Cummins trucks are you talking? My F-250 is a 04 and my F-350 PS SRW is a 06.

I had a 05 Dmax 3500 SRW and it was 9,900# and I thought they were the only one with that low of GVWR's

In PA You can go to any Notary and file forms to lower the GVW of a trailer. The dealer did offer to lower the GVW when I bought the trailer but as I stated he felt I was better off with the higher rated GVW just in case I had a heavy load on and got checked.

I am pretty sure only the first line manufacturer can set the GVWR. When it is changed you get a yellow Vin number. I asked a couple of co-workers about this at work on Friday and they also agreed with me.You can have modifications done to it prior taking delivery to change the GVWR, but once you take delivery I am pretty sure it can no longer be changed. They will also not change it without some type of modification.

I looked for it at work under 571 but was not able to locate it. I will try to check into it more on Monday.

I don't think you are changing the GVWR, you are just changing what the vehicle is registered for. Something again entirely different.

Your 'snip' says nothing about who does or does not need a Med card.

Your correct, I guess I just pointed out that the only thing required to pull the trailer was a regular licence. With that you do not need a health card even if used in commerce.

You are correct about changing the rating, but as far as law enforcement is concerned, what is on that registration card is king, no disputing that. If you have a 15,000 GVWR trailer and it is registered foe 9,900 GVWR and your scaled weight is 14,000, you are toast bud. Get your wallet out cause it's gonna cost and it ain't purty.

There is no such thing as a set GVW. It is GVWR. and many truck upfitters can redo GVWR.

WOW, tough crowd. You are correct again, forgot the R, thanks for pointing that out. :D

Again the GVWR can only be changed by a front line manufacture. This has to be done prior to taking delivery of the vehicle. I am pretty sure of this although I have not been able to find it yet. It may be different for other states, but pretty sure it is a federal reg.

Yes it can be changed, when for example a truck is purchased and then sent to another manufacturer for modifications, such as a well drilling unit. This has to be done prior to taking delivery of the unit. Modifications can still be done after taking delivery, however you will not be able to change the GVWR.

Yep, but that is not what we are talking about. We are talking about the GVWR for the class of license you need to drive the unit.

My brothers company changes GVWR's on used equipment all the time.

To say that because it only requires a regular license it doesn't need a med card is incorrect as I previously pointed out.

I went through all the old post and missed that, can you point out the post # or give and example again.

Here is a snip when a health card is needed and when a CDL is needed. This is from the MN site but it mirrors the federal regulation.

Are you sure he is changing the GVWR and not the registered weight? Changing the registered weight is not a problem, changing the GVWR is.

They are changing GVWR's. They add and remove axles all the time. If you brought them a used tandem axle to add a tag to it would be worthless without raising the GVWR.

They also make vin plates.

In the image I posted every time you needed a med card you needed a CDL. In your own example it was when a CDL required.

You do not need a med card if a CDL is not required. Can you give me a specific example were I am wrong?

Really?

Right in the image you posted,

"Over 10,000 lbs gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) operating in interstate commerce"

That does not require a CDL but it does require a Med card.

Truckers add tags all the time without changing the GVWR. Most states you are only allowed 80,000 gross, 34,000 tandem axle and in MN 43,500 on a tridem (depending on axle spacing). This allows them to not worry if the trailer is evenly loaded.

They also do this for heavy haul. It is tough to get a permit for over weight for more than 20,000 per axle. Not saying it can't be done, just very hard to do.

Likewise I never said it was easy but it can be done.
