I think map sites like Google Earth and Bing is also a cause for concern. Many of these people driving your road may have cased out the place beforehand online...and may already have an idea of what is on your property. It's scary thinking about it. People don't honor signs and our privacy has been posted online for everybody to see...

County mapping offices show the aerial photos. I think our county was doing it before Google. I downloaded a PDF file from the state this week that was showing broad band coverage. Boy were they wrong on available coverage. So wrong you really wonder if they were flipping coins to create the map.

What was interesting is that the PDF file would take an address or zip code and zoom to that location. Then show overlays including aerial photos. The photos were similar to what Google or the county GIS offers. Though it did not allow one to really drill down compared to the county or Google.

I have seen other PDF's put out by the state and/or county with this aerial photos.

Pandora's box has been opened....

Later,
Dan

What Google Earth provides (aerial photos) was already available. It's just way faster, easier & free using Google Earth. You don't have to get in your car, drive downtown, & pay for paper copies of aerial photos.

My own county also offers aerial photos online for free. Theirs aren't as quick-&-easy as Google Earth, but all the data's there.

Interesting thread.

I don't think signs work, but just to cover my bases, I have three no tresspassing signs at my gate. I keep my gate closed most of the time, but if I'm around the house I sometimes leave it open.

The gate solved all my problems, but keeping it closed is the only thing that has really worked.

Two most common excuses that I've had is that they are looking for their lost dog or they are looking for a friend and thought this was where he lived. I write down their license plate and make it obvious that I've done so. Then I reply to their questions. Most of the dog excuses are made up because they can't come up with a breed, name or description of the dog they are looking for. I had a couple who both replied at the same time with different answers to the breed of their dog.

Local crack heads are the biggest problem. They are in and out of jail, will steal just about anything, including gates. I've made a big deal of writing down their license plate, and even went and sat in front of their moble home and took pictures of their home and car sitting out in front of it so they could see me. I was very obvious in what I was doing, but never went on their land.

Thieves and tresspassers are very tempermental about others doing to them what they do to others.

Since then, I haven't seen them again.

Man you hit that on the head. The most beligerant and off the handle people I had to deal with were people trying to steal from the store I was working at.

I bought my house in May of this year. I have a 1035 ft gravel drive and ten acres. I can't see the road from my house. So far I have had one person drive all the way up to my house and turn around quick and drive back out. I have several signs and a cattle gate that I am too lazy to close. I will start closing it if I start getting more curious people. Right now with the snow and ice the curious have decided to not attempt my drive and the cattle gate is stuck in a large snowy ice berm. We have had 26.5 inches of snow so far in Spokane this year.

Yep RB. Think your hiding your shop over the hill with all your implements, nope, google earth will show it all and the roads to it. Then they can use google maps and actually see your drive.

I didn't read through all 9 pages...

I live at the top of a long private road - it's approx 1/2 mile long. There are 4 houses at the top and we're responsible for the road. I'm at the very top and have a governors loop and see strangers all the time. Yes it's annoying.

On the other hand, when we posted Private Drive signs, the delivery people stopped coming up to the house. We'd have to go pick up mail and deliveries too often for my liking. May not be important at all and my actually differ in your area, but keep it in mind.

Dad's 'Private Lane' sign didn't stop the Jehova's Witnesses but him answering the door, shotgun in hand, asking "What part of Private Lane didn't you understand?" put an ent to them.

The ROW was legally closed [7 years of non-use in PA] and the farmer who worked the field next to his property was told to plow up the road on his side. The next spring Dad had to use the tractor to pull out the embarassed State Trooper who couldn't read signs.

The field was real wet after the end of dad's driveway gravel andthe trooper car was in the mud up to the headlights...

You Dad is a better man than I am. My tractor tends to have mechanical issues if the job entails pulling the cops out of the mud.

My concern while responding on a fire engine, while you have a heart attack or your house burns down. I'll be stuck by the hazard signs, waiting for clearance from LEO or dispatch to enter a hazardous area.

I'd be concerned too, if there was any such emergency response support in my area in the first place. Valid concerns for those who are offered such services though.

For me, it has to do with how many times I've been ripped off. After one theft where they stole $9,000 in aluminum street light poles (9 poles 14' long), I'd had enough and the gates and video went in.

Only two thefts since then. The first, we couldn't get the plate as I didn't have the camera focused quite right. The second, we got the plate and the police payed him a visit at work since he used a company van for the theft.

I'll see if I can figure out how to post video tonight.

OK, here are links to the videos.

The first video is from a camera about 225 feet from the gate and the gate is 12 feet wide.

We have a 4 by 8 laminated sign thats reflective. Says Private Landfill No Unauthorized vehicles. You wouldnt believe how many folks think they are authorized. Same story.

Just wanted to see whats down here,

Is there any Fish in that pond.

Can I dump this one thing.

What do yall do down here.

Are there any deer here.

We made some one really proud. Last year we were doing a walk around of the perimetier fence and behind some Houses o nthe property line theres a deer trail tat runs inside the fence. I noticed Pepsi can on a stick. We happened to walk down that trail where the can was and found a nice Real tree duck blind used for deer. Gave it to a workers son. We recently found one similar to it on the landfill we burnt it in place.

Wow, dcryrlic, you got the evidence. Makes the case that more than one camera is useful, as is lights at night.

Am wondering how your system works. I've considered something similar.

Is this something you built yourself, or is it a turn key purchased system? Brand name or web site?

Does the video run all the time, or just when motion is detected?

Is it saved in the camera, or sent to a common location such as a personal computer?

Do you get an alert when motion is detected, or do you just go look "after the fact?"

Hmm...just realized that answering these questions in the open is dangerous in itself since this info could be used to defeat your system...so, you may either ignore (and I won't be offended) or PM me. Sad comment on our times and human nature.

I'm good with your questions. I don't hide the cameras. In fact, the sign on the gate that you see the back of in the videos states that the area is under live/recorded video survailence.:confused2:

As for my system, it is one which I built myself. I have a Pelco DX7016 DVR. Retail price between $5,000-8,000. Pelco DX7016 Series 16 Camera Digital Recorder

I have three Pelco Esprit 3012 PTZ cameras. Pelco Esprit Color System w/Pedestal Adapter. I got them as enclosures only and put what cameras and lenses I could afford in them (mostly purchased off Ebay). One has the ultra low light camera 1/3 in. High Res Day/Night Compact Camera 12/24VAC which goes down to .002 lux. Two have Pelco CC3751H-2 low light cameras Pelco CC3751H-2 Digital Color Security Camera<BR>High Resolution, Lowlight, DSS Technology. I also have a less expensive Pelco PTZ unit with a less expensive color camera in it. I have three fixed cameras, two on the front gate which you've seen in the videos. The one with the 30x zoom looking right down the drive and an inexpensive B/W camera which really doesn't see very well in the dark. The last fixed camera is on my north gate and has a cheaper color camera.

I use Multimode fiberoptics to bring the video back to the DVR and take the control out to the cameras using IFS video encoders. http://www.gesecurity.com/portal/GESDownload?ID=4346&DID=4329&documenttype=Data Sheet. I use VT/VR 1500WDM single fiber modules for the PTZ cameras and have several VT1101M transmitters for the fixed cameras. GE Security Products - Mini Video Transmitters (Direct Camera Mount) VT1101M Series

I have slowly purchased them all off Ebay and on one purchase got 43 pieces including a rack for the rackmount receivers for $400.00. Retail price of my fiber equipment would be around $50,000 and probably around another $25,000 in camera equipment.:confused2: I've actually spent around $5,000 for everything.

I just purchased a Sentry V604. It's a small, 4 camera capable system but is expandable.
Sentry V Series Digital Video Recorder Surveillance Equipment

With three Sentry 5324IR outdoor night vision cameras.

It just arrived today and is still in the boxes. I hope the bad guys aren't reading this...

I know people who put up signs and fake cameras to try to scare thieves off.

I believe that if I can't read a plate or ID a face, then I've wasted my money.

I have a driveway alarm tied into my home automation system. Our drive is 1400', through the woods and up a hill. The wired alarm is at the first curve. So I have at least a few seconds to take action. The action always includes video of the driveway. If we are home, the system announces that a vehicle was detected. I go to a window and can see down to the last curve. If it is a vehicle I recognize (meter reader, UPS, etc.), I don't do anything. If I don't recognize the vehicle, I'm on the front porch waiting. Normally, it is lost, "just wanted to see" or "do you allow hunting/fishing." One winter I was on the porch and a car full of kids came up, saw me and turned around in the yard, making a real mess. Didn't have good enough video or eyes to catch the plate, but they never came back either.

If we are not at home, I get an email or phone call on my cell (I've changed to email with the new smart phone). If it is night, every light in the place is on.

We have never been robbed (thankfully). One time I called the sheriff to report a guy who clearly was asking questions I wasn't going to answer. I asked him if I should add a sign at the bottom of the hill, on the drive. He said the low-lives won't bother to read it - or can't.

I would go for a drive alarm and as much video as you can afford.

We purchased land on a discontinued road. At the time we purchased the property I went through all of the property research looking for any issues that might show it's ugly face and there was nothing. Had a lawyer do a title search, and pay particular attention to the discontinued roadway. Everything came back clean the road had been closed over a hundred years ago and there was nothing to worry about! WRONG

People were using the road often and the major concern was the mid-night drivers coming up so I put up a 14 foot gate feeling it is my land and I have a right to stop people from entering.

Well, someone took me to court and the liberal courts decided I did not have a right to prevent people from entering the property and was told to take down the gate. We were very upset but the judge did say he understood we had young children and were afraid for their safety so they imposed a 5 MPH speed limit, with the stipulation that the town would not have to enforce it!

Being a gun owner and believing in God I felt if anyone came on my property uninvited they just might meet both! (I actually got that from a song I heard) I mentioned that to our town police chief one night and he immediately pointed out to me not to never mention having a gun to anyone coming on my property again!

He went on to say I could end up in jail. So for over thirty years people have been able to ingress and egress as they please and I have posted 5 MPH signs on the roadway and no one slows down so I yell at them, wife thinks I am off the deep end, but it does satisfy me a bit just to yell out once in awhile. Oh there have also been times where I park half on the old discontinued road making it a bit tough to get by, after all it is my property and I pay taxes on it! I have calmed down over the years and if we see two or three unkown cars a month it is a high number, but I still get a bit upset over it.

Well, this past year we have a fellow named Ward Bird that held out his pistol to get someone to leave his property and is now serving 3 - 6 years in Prison for his actions. He was convected of criminal threatening and the state supreme court up held the ruling. I am sure there is more to the story than he just held up his gun to the woman, but really she was lost and way off from the town maintained roadways.

Man's Prison Sentence Sparks Anger In Community - New Hampshire News Story - WMUR Manchester

Bottom line is I guess, be careful on how you handle those trespassers and also what you say to them, courts are not overly protective of land owners.
