I was just wondering how far most of you commute to work. My commute is 90 miles one way, yep 180 miles a day.

I do have the farthest commute of those I work with, however, one has about 77 miles one way, two have about 60 miles one way, one 40 something, one about 20 and the other three live within 10 miles.

So am I totally nuts like some people claim (maybe for other reasons) or are there many others that have a long commute.

I tried doing a search to see if this topic was covered before but came up blank.

Prior to retiring in '06, I lived in Jefferson Co. WV & drove 20 miles to the Harper's Ferry train station where I'd catch the MARC train for a 70+ mile ride into Union Station in Wash. DC where I'd walk 6 blocks to my office. Did that for about 18 years...

The only way I could tollerate that drive time is with audio novels...
I'm mostly retired but...
in the city (Winter residence) where there are traffic signals every few blocks...I don't take jobs more than a mile or two from home...most of the work I do in FL is at local marinas and boat yards...
...in the country (Summer residence) I don't take that many jobs...but I'm currently adding a full bath to a house that is about 50 miles from the cabin...

I do 70 miles a day. I thought that was a lot but looks like I'm a rookie.

I'm very fortunate to have just a 14 mile commute, one way, while still living in a rural area. It's the closest commute I've ever had, and it's just on the edge of where rural area ends and the crowded towns outside of the city start. I could never actually work in the city, which would be about a 50 mile commute.

I think a 90 mile commute is an okay trade-off for living in a nice area though. And yes, the audio books are key!

I often wish it were possible to have an hour+ commute in the morning and a ten minute commute home after work.

Sometimes its nice other times not so much but I have about a 1 mile round trip for work.

Why do you even consider having a job so far away? If the job is that good, then why not move? In 35 years, the farthest away that I have ever had my shop was a 12 minute drive and I hated that. I can not even imagine diving the distances that you are mentioning.

Ooh, I would never move for a job. Jobs can come and go, but a home is something you spend your life building. Well, at least usually for us tractor types.

So you would drive the 180 miles everyday, or would you look for a different job?

15.1 miles one way. Depending on traffic, anywhere from 20 minutes, to 35. Occassionally an hour coming home on Friday(I'm on the main artery going to Lake Tahoe...).

That must be a great job to commute that distance.

I end up staying late a lot, so adding an hour and a half to my day before I got home would leave no time for the honey-do list..

In my case, I got transferred by my employer (federal gov.) to work out of the DC central office. No way I could cope with metro living ... no way the wife would have stayed with me if I had moved into that craziness. We both need our space to decompress. Also had kids I wanted to have a more healthy setting than metro DC environs. Knew I'd never handle a drive-in commute, so found out where the rail line ran & headed toward the far end!

50 feet. In the morning I walk from my bedroom to my office. I like the job because clothing is optional but I hate commuting that far -- though a good hot cup of coffee makes the trip go faster.

I'd look for a different job. 180 miles is pretty extreme. Either that, or I'd get a helicopter. :)

I work in Cincinnati. It's a long drive to get rural from there. No places to work around home. That's my reason for the drive. A hassle but worth it for me.

64 Km one way over a BC mountain pass. Buck twenty eight everyday. I love the animals on the side of the road. Not so much when their on the road. Moose, Elk, and Black bears can wake you up really fast when they pop out.

if you stub a toe & spill it on the lower half that 50' commute will feel like 180 miles:eek:

mine now is 50 miles round trip if i come home past the farm.

I wont drive ant farther.

i would suggest never going over an hr for a job, move or new one...

I have been with the same employer over 20 years. I used to work in the Twin Cities Metro area. I really wanted to get out of the city, my current position became available and I was lucky enough to get it. We already had our current home that we used for a vacation place with the intent to retire there. After I got my new position the wife and I talked about moving, heck we even had our place on the market for a week.

I come home from work one day and the wife was crying, I asked her what was wrong and she said she didn't want to move. I said OK and we took our place of the market.

I have less than 6 years to retire and figure I can handle it that long. The way figure I use to spent 45 minutes to commute in the cities fighting traffic. Now it is an hour and a half with only 3 stop signs (two on gravel roads, one in a small town I drive through.) I have about 2 miles of gravel roads, 28 miles of state highway and 60 miles of interstate.

Yes it would be nice if the commute back home was only 10 minutes, but the extra time I spend gives me time to unwind.
