How Important is Made in the USA?

I often wonder how many USA implement producers would disclose the country of origin of the basic ingredent, steel? Ken Sweet

I could also see companies advertising "made from us steel" when they use our scrap steel and remelt/re-manufacture. Technically that would be US steel would it not? I know it is a stretch, but I would be willing to bet that somebody is getting away with it. Just a thought.

I think you have it about right. To market their low grade ore, I would bet they mix our good steel with their junk. They have a history of slipping things over on us, until we catch them. Ken Sweet

I can't say 100% of our steel is made in the US since suppliers occasionally outsource to cover shortages, but the vast majority of the steel we usel is made in the US. Domestic steel is easier to get than many other items.

We have lost thousands of manufacturing jobs locally. That has a ripple effect throughout the economy. **** right I'd pay more for a quality USA product!

Their last EPA fine was $98 million. I wonder how much longer they'll be producing steel in the US?

EPA = Ending Production in America

The US is putting itself out of business.

Ken, I wonder if the manufacturers change steel suppliers in trying to lower costs. I know many industries try to lower costs constantly and are always looking for alternative suppliers of components for their products. I would imagine that the agricultural industry is no different.

I bought a Woods mower 3 years ago after I ran a Land Pride for 14 years. I don't know where the bearings and steel came from in the Woods but I paid a premium price for the mower. I've got a feeling that the Land Pride had US bearings. I never replaced on in 14 years of hard use. Really good product.

Good one! I have yet to figure out how implementing new, tougher rules on us in the USA, is going to help the environment, if production just moves to a country where anything goes. If the playing field were equal, things would be alot different. Why can't we impose tariffs on products that can't prove were made using sound environmental practices and non-slave labor? We are policing ourselves to death in this country. I am not better off today than 4 years ago.

How about your parents, or your grandparents? I bet you are better off than they were........
You guys are right, give companies free reign to do what ever they want, that will make it all better, oh yeah, even with the tight restrictions, bp still has that little leak in the gulf. I bet that would not have happened with no regulations.

As for the price of the implements, I agree with what many have said, if it is a quality product, I would gladly pay 10-20 percent more. My feeling is that if this is the case, overseas manufactured producers would just lower their prices to force out the competition. I believe that the profit margin is very large on some of these imported goods. They will always be able to produce goods cheaper. I have seen this at work, two products that serve the same purpose, the cost of overseas manufactured, about 50 percent of US made. Both high quality items. Retail price are within 10-15 percent, where is the difference is the wholesale price. So, the foreign stuff make more for my company. Don't know if it is the same situation as implements, but seems logical.

Here's a link that rates autos according to their domestic content. It's interesting to me that the Toyota Tundra has a higher domestic content than the Ram 1500.

10 'most American' cars - 1. Toyota Camry (1) - CNNMoney.com

I'm not sure I understand their order. If you look at the "U.S. Parts" percentage, the order/ranking doesn't make sense. They state the Camry is the "Most US" car, but there are others that have a higher U.S. Parts percentage.
