I'm kinda new to the tractor world, but have been learning a lot from this forum over the last few months. I've retired from the military after 24 years and my wife wanted horses, so now we have 5 on 17 acres.

Here's my question:
If you were looking for an older Ford tractor in the 40-80hp range, what models would you consider? Which ones are worth the time and effort to keep running and aren't too difficult to find parts for? Are some too difficult to add extra remotes to, etc?

Here's some background:
I originally thought I only needed about 40hp, with a loader, for moving round bales and mowing and fence post digging. I also anticipate moving dirt to level out a spot for a new barn and using a box blade, and other field prep/conditioning equipment, and maybe a baler at some point.

When it rains even a little i've found that I can't get my F350 4x4 dually out into the field without getting it stuck, to drop off a round bale. A local farmer has been driving his tractor about 4 miles to deliver the bales when it is wet (he has a McCormick 80hp 4WD) So, it seems 4WD might be important for me. Someone suggested that 4WD improves pulling so sometimes more hp is not required. Some have suggested that the extra hp is not that much more in cost so I should consider getting it if I can afford it, and it will give me the ability to lift the heavier loads safely if I should need it (without risking tipping over). I'm really new to all this tractor stuff, and as you can see, I've been getting advice all over the spectrum.

It seems there are a lot of fans of the older tractors. An older tractor doesn't bother me, as I used to be a certified auto mechanic, so I would think I'd be able to do a lot of maintenance if required, as long as parts were available, and ok, sometimes I like to work on stuff (turning something with potential into something worthwhile).

I'm trying to spend less than $20K, but am willing and able to spend whatever is required.

Thanks for taking your time to help out a newbie. Adrian

For moving round bales are you going to be stacking them or just moving them? If just moving them a three point hitch (3PH) will carry bales and give a 2 WD tractor a lot more traction.

In the Ford line we had a 1966 5000 and a 1978 5600. Both in the mid 50's on HP but neither was 4WD. I don't know which models had the front wheel assist.

Thanks for your service in the military also:thumbsup:

Right now, I usually roll the round bales out of the back of the truck, so I guess I could do that, and then use the 3 point to move it to where it needs to go...

I've found a Ford 6600, 4wd, w/loader and bushog for $9000. Looks a little rough, haven't driven it yet. Is there anything special I should evaluate on these older Fords? Is this price in the ball park?

I'm fairly sure it says 6600 on it. From reading the forums, seems people like the -10s... why is that?

xx10s just means it is the newest of that line.

ie.. 6600 , 6610, 6610 II, 6610s

Get something with four wheel drive. You will never regret spending the extra bucks. When you want to update it will bring more money and sell alot quicker.

Any 4000 or 5000 series should handle the task. Dad had a 4600 that was very nice size to manage hay.

4WD is nice for a FEL or you have the need to make ruts. I like to steer with the brakes but 4WD does not encourge turning on a dime. :D

it's a tradeoff if he wants old.. as the older you get the less 4wd options you see.

in many cases a large 2wd will work fine.. even for loader work.

personally if I was moving hay.. I'd want weight and hp first, for safety. if I was in snow, ice or constant mud or on hills.. then 4wd too.

if I get this Ford 6600, where do I go for parts? It was obviously built before the New Holland buy out. Do I go to New Holland? or is there a good parts supplier online for old Fords?

I would say the dealership or 1000 other places for any tractor sold in the number the Fords were sold and used.

how far are you willing to travel or are you trying to keep it local? the reason i ask is because the local Case dealer about 40 min from me in Orangeburg, SC has a VERY nice looking Ford 5610 II. it's about 70hp, 2wd, has a front end loader, and hour meter shows a little over 2,000 hours. from the look of the tractor though you'd never guess it had that many. i looked it over a week or so ago. i'll look on tractorhouse and see if he has it listed on there and post it here for you to look at.

most full size fords have very GOOD parts support from CNH dealers.

I was able to look at and drive the Ford 6600 this evening. It is fairly rough cosmetically, and obviously sat outside for many years. It was originally sold in Germany by the data plates on it. It also has a German brand front end loader (one small re-weld patch on the left side corner but doesn't appear structurally bent). The story of its late life is that an older man owned it and after he died his son took possession of the tractor. He decided to sell it for cheap, and a local country used tire dealer guy saw it as a turn around profit and bought it and is now selling it (he's had it since last summer). Serial number is 9H28B8-70V01. Can anyone decipher that for me as to year, etc. The tires are all dry rotted. The hydraulic cylinder for the pivot of the bucket leaks in streams (he says the seals cost $35), and the hydraulic block under the seat on top of the transmission leaks quite a bit also (it there a simple seal kit to fix this?).
The hour meter is showing 3700+ hours. He had to lug a battery to it, so I know it hadn't been started recently (it had rained here for several days), and it started immediately with very little smoke (diesel engine). Exhaust and oil look good. It had some clack noise to it, as diesels do. It operated in all gears 1-4 and R both Hi & Lo. Brakes seemed to work. He thought it was full time 4WD. Is the round lever that you pull up on the left side of the seat floor near the transfer case to the front drive axle how you engage and disengage the 4WD? The FEL controls were to the right of the seat and low (nearly underneath). Is there an easy way to move these to a better location, like a joy stick? My wife didn't care for the gear shift levers mounted on the floor between the knees.
It has a leaking seal on the right front axle. Are these too difficult to replace or expensive? It looks like it takes a special short long battery to fit under the cowl (he doesn't have one). How much will this set me back?
The bush hog is a 7 foot and fairly new. It is quite heavy. PTO seems to engage fine, no signs of leaks anywhere on the 3pt. area.
My overall impression, needs a lot of TLC. Engine and Trans seem good. Bush hog seems less than 1 year old. Is $9000 reasonable for this. He also has a box blade for $450.

the bad thing about a 6600 ford is that it had a after market fwd that was not a factory options it is a salen fwd which is hard to get parts for we had to get a machine shop to build some parts for a 7600 fwd front end the xx10 serious tractors was better as far as fwd because they was installed by ford themselves at the factory and had carro front ends which was used in a many different other brands and is still very easy to get but other than the the 6600 ford is a very dependable tractor we had one with over 12000 hours before any major problems with it any ford xx10 or xx30 series tractor is a good tractor and will be well in budget for what u are wonting to spend
