Are you saying the solution is for the Churches, Mosques and Synagogues to step up?

If you look at the traditional role of those groups. Yes.
If the government wasn't deducting an obscene amount of taxes out of your pocket, wouldn't you be more inclined to help out your favorite charity.
These groups have also been more "efficient" at charity, than government.

Soylent Green - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I saw it a very long time ago, but my recollection is that the premise of the movie is that the world's food supply isn't sufficient to feed everyone. So the government resorts to using the sick and dying as a source to feed everyone else. Charlton Heston discovers the trickery, but ends up as part of the food chain.

In the updated version, the plot is averted when it was made public here on a thread at TBN, and a bunch of guys using specially modifiied black tractors plant unusually productive crops flooding the world markets with excess food.

Crusty,
We Honor your service to this country, and I for one feel that anyone who has put himself in harms way should not have to worry about the necessities after achieving "senior" status.
But I think we need to "look behind the curtain"
Where did all that money that you and millions of others paid in SS go? Was it squandered by the same politicians who now want an even bigger pot of gold?
Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice, shame on me!

The population of the U.S. has doubled since I was a kid. The world population has tripled. The folks that started our church used to give two bucks a week in the collection basket because that was a lot of money back then. They still give two bucks a week 50 years later. The church is going broke. The number of parishioners is dropping. That is the case with most religions in this country. Since we are not supposed to discuss religion and politics, I will not delve any further into why I think that is. I do not think the Churches, Mosques and Synagogues, and other organized groups like the Salvation Army, St. Vincent De Paul, The Shriners, Elks, Moose, you name the group, are able to handle the masses of needy people any more. Too few members giving too few dollars to help too many people. It is sad, but true.

That's the sequel version, but there is a late night cult spinoff version (badly done, too) when all out war erupts between the Black tractor brigade and the real drug dealers. As it turns out, the tractors are really alien transformers, but I don't want to spoil the ending for those of you who haven't seen it yet.
