I can't for the life of me seem to locate the neutral switch near the foot pedals to test reference a starting problem. I already pulled a bonehead maneuver and pulled of the cruise control magnet switch which is working fine thinking it was the problem.

Basically to get the tractor started I need to be sitting in the seat and push the forward hyrdo pedal once or thrice before it will attempt to crank. While running with pto disengaged and in park etc it now shuts off from the seat switch. It must still think it's in gear. The obvious thing to check would be the neutral switch but I can't find it lol. The sad part is the online parts catalog shows a picture of it by itself but I'm missing it on the tractor. Anyone have a pic of where it is located?

Thanks for the help.

I don't have a picture, but if you lay on your back and look up through the cast hole in the bottom of the transmission housing, you will see it bolted to one of the plates. It's held on with two very small nut & bolts. Should be the only switch you see in the pedal linkage.
It looks just like the picture, not much bigger than a box of matches with a single plunger on the side. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the description Joe, I found it. That thing is a pain to get off, holy smokes. I ended it just leaving it on after testing it and then bypassing the switch until the local JD dealer can have get the part in Friday. I'm not looking forward to replacing it.

is there a way to temporarily bypass the neutral switch on a 4300 HST John Deere?

Follow the wires to the connector, thenn put a jumper across them. I
soldered mine together.

NSS? These things have an NSS? Huh. What does it prevent from happening on these models?

I have the 4300 HST, and don't recall missing any functions as a result of a neutral safety switch. But I do see it in the service manual "Transmission Neutral Shift Switch".

dccircles Welcome to the forum.
What is the need for bypassing the switch? It escapes me. :)

The neutral start switch prevents the engine from starting if the pto is engaged, or transmission is not in neutral. (hydro pedal not centered on hydro)If you have a no start situation, you can bypass the switch to test if it is defective. Or the safest way to test it is to connect an ohmmeter to the switch.

Thanks jd110. I've run into the PTO-engaged no-start.

Eventually, it will fail and leave you stranded. There is no clutch, so no
clutch safety switch. It is hard to get in there, as mentioned. In this
photo, you can see the switch has been replaced once. It is gone now.

I have also jumpered the seat occupancy safety switch. HST tractors
are inherently very safe, as long at the go pedals return to neutral.

Where is the location of that pic, in general? Shot from below or above? Or with what removed?

Thanks for posting, as I want to locate it asap. :)
And get it de-commisioned.

I must not have a seat occupancy switch anymore because I can get off the tractor while the PTO is engaged.

I like the NSS though. No good reason I can think of to start an HST in motion.

It is a pistol to get at with all assembled. That last photo is with everything
apart. This next photo shows more. To service the switch you have to
reach up inside the square hole in the bottom of the tractor. You can
disconnect the wire connector there, or trace it back to the left side and
jumper it there.

Wow! Thanks for the pic.

I really like the backdrop shown in that pic. Looks pretty peaceful and all. :D

Thanks to Joe: I have been fighting difficult starting due to switches, not functioning the first time, some times takes 4 or more shakes of gear shift and or bouncing on the seat switch, to get it to crank. already jumpered the seat switch, I also seem to have a switch on top of the gear shift housing, pressing up against the fiber glass floorboards, machine stops when I step off of the deck. So I will go out in the field tomorrow in the daylight to see if I can find more switches. Thanks for the help. SCS,
